  William Shepperd Ashe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
William Shepperd Ashe (14 September 1814 - 14 September 1862) was a Democratic U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1849 and 1855.
Ashe engaged in rice cultivation and studied law; he was admitted to the state bar in 1836 and practiced in New Hanover County.
Ashe was killed in a railroad accident near Wilmington, North Carolina on September 14, 1862.

His father, William Shepperd Ashe (1814-1862), served in the North Carolina Senate and as a member of the United States Congress.
Samuel A. Ashe married Hannah Emerson Willard in 1871 and had nine children, one of whom was William Willard Ashe, who became a noted botanist and worked for the United States Forest Service.
Ashe served with the Confederate Army throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of captain.

A Majority of the justices being present, Andrew Dickson, sheriff of Ashe County appeared in open court and tendered his resignation as sheriff which resignation was accepted by the court.
Ordered by the court that William Bell be bound to John Dickson that the said Dickson is to give the said Ball twelve months school, one house and bridle worth fifty dollars at the sale of property of 1864.
It is therefore ordered that William Baker and S. Windle, Esqr be appointed to take the private examination of the said female covents separate and apart from their husbands touching their willingness to execute said deed and return their report to the next term of the court.

The first of the Reddies River Shepherds to permanently settle in Ashe was John Finley Shepherd, a son of Larkin Shepherd, and grandson of John Shepherd, Jr, who settled in the Cranberry Creek area about 1845.

There is a William Riggs in Scott County (neighboring Russell County) who may be old enough (over 45 years of age in 1820) to have been the father of the unknown Riggs female, but he seems like a weak candidate.
Vanderpool in Ashe County, who is a half-brother of Abraham Vanderpool; the younger male living with him, though, is thought to be his son.
There was a Shepperd family in Surry County, North Carolina, at the same time the Vanderpools lived there: a James Sheppard died there in 1781 and a Jacob Sheppard died there in 1808.
