William Grant Stairs (July 1, 1863 – June 9, 1892) was a Canadian explorer, soldier, and adventurer.
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the sixth child and third son of John Stairs and Mary Morrow, he attended school at Fort Massey Academy in Halifax, Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Royal Military College of Canada.
Captain Stairs is buried in the European Cemetery in Chinde, Mozambique at the mouth of the Zambezi River.

William Machin Stairs, (January 21, 1789 – November 28, 1865) was a merchant, a banker, and a statesman.
William Machin Stairs was the son of John Stairs (1749-1797) who had emigrated from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
Stairs was also active in politics, serving as mayor of Halifax from 1847 to 1848 and then as a Member of the Nova Scotia General Assembly and as a Legislative Councillor.

During two of his three-year journeys across Africa, Stairs discovered one source of the Nile, the Semliki River, and became the first non-African to ever climb in the Ruwenzoris.
In Dublin, Ireland there is a bronze plaque depicting this August 13, 1887 event on the statue of expedition Surgeon Major Thomas Heazle Parke who removed the arrow and sucked the poison from the wound.
A collection of artifacts from his African expeditions are at the McCord Museum, Montreal, Quebec and his diaries are preserved in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia.

The hamlet of Stair in Scotland nestles at the bottom of a glen beside the River Ayr at the north-west border of the 5,376 acre (22 km²) parish of Stair where the River Ayr is joined by Trabboch Burn in what is now known as East Ayrshire.
Once part of the District of Kyle, a historic sub-region of Ayrshire, the parish of Stair was created in 1653 at the request of James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount Stair who arranged for the severence of a part of Ochiltree to form a new parish.
Other places of interest in the parish of Stair are Stair brig built in 1745 and Stair Church first built in 1706 and replaced with the existing structure in 1864.

John Fitzwilliam Stairs (January 19, 1848 - September 26, 1904) was an entrepreneur and statesman, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, a member of the prominent Stairs family of merchants and shippers founded by William Machin Stairs (1789-1865) that included the Victorian era explorer, William Grant Stairs.
He was elected to the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly in 1879, resigning in 1882 to successfully run for election to the Canadian House of Commons in Ottawa where he served as a Conservative Party member until 1896.
Max Aitken was at Stairs' bedside when he passed away in Toronto, Ontario, where he was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

House of Stairs is about several young people that are blindfolded and taken and left in the middle of an enormous "building" with no walls, floor, or ceiling, just complex and endless staircases.
There's no way to tell where they are or who put them there, and the only sign of the outside world is a large blinking light in the middle of a stairway that gives out food when certain actions are performed.
House of Stairs is one of my favorites, but all of William Sleator's books are great.

House of Stairs is William Sleator's fourth book of, if I am not mistaken, six.
House of Stairs presents to us a futuristic world with new ideas and new technology, but this world is not a fairy tale and seems very likely to be our furture in the next five to ten years.

The William you are enquiring about was a cousin of John F. Stairs.
His father was William J.'s brother, with whom he had a falling out in 1853.
The Halifax Stairs did not think there was a connection to the NB Stairs, but I think there was.
