 Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony
For to be honest, Steinberg was too often less than happy, and I think it would be fair to say that he sometimes felt mistreated -- by three or four influential music critics in New York or Boston, or by this or that agent.
Steinberg struggled terribly early on in his career, and it is no exaggeration to say that coming to PIttsburgh not only saved him, it made him.
I could say that Steinberg was capable of drawing from an orchestra -- somehow with that almost unfathomable beat -- an exquisite, delicate phrasing, a certain subtle, intimate grace which only a very few conductors are even capable of hearing.

Steinberg graduated with distinction in 1920, having been awarded the Wullner Prize for conducting.
But along the way Steinberg was also attracted to the podium of the Buffalo Philharmonic, largely through the efforts of the versatile and industrious Cameron Baird (who at the time was the Chairman of the UB Music Department).

BRUCE STEINBERG, Merrill Lynch: What the Fed is really worried about is that we're on the verge of running out of warm bodies that is, our unemployment rate is so low, that they're worried there's no one left to hire anymore and that this could eventually lead to some inflation pressures down the road.
WILLIAM CHENEY, John Hancock: Well, I think what I would like to add is that it's strange that they would choose this particular moment, this particular level of unemployment, let's say, to decide that we're running out of warm bodies.
Steinberg, where are you on this question of whether we're in a new economy, and where do you think the Fed is saying it is on that question?

 STRAUSS
After frequent highly successful guest appearances with the Boston Symphony it was assumed William Steinberg (Wilhelm Hans Steinberg before he emigrated to the US from Germany in 1938) would become Music Director of the BSO when Charles Munch left in 1962.
When Leinsdorf left the BSO, Steinberg finally was appointed Music Director, a post he held from 1969 through 1972, retaining his similar post with the Pittsburgh Symphony, one of the first conductors to lead two major orchestras simultaneously, a practice very common since.
Steinberg in 1924 became principal conductor of the Cologne Opera where he became familiar with Strauss operas and the composer's purely symphonic works as well; Also sprach Zarathustra was long in his repertory.

DSCH 18 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Leningrad Symphony
Steinberg's promising career in Germany had been crippled when the Nazis came to power and restricted him to conducting all-Jewish orchestras.
As it was also Toscanini who later recommended Steinberg to the Buffalo Philharmonic for the post of music director, Steinberg's choice of the Leningrad for the orchestra's first recording may have served double-duty as a tribute to his mentor, the conductor of the Seventh Symphony's US broadcast premiere.
Steinberg's is an athletic, sinewy interpretation, which makes one regret that he never recorded the work again with an even better ensemble.

William Steinberg's tenure with the Boston Symphony Orchestra was brief, and it was plagued by ill health.

In the Strauss, Steinberg is unfailingly muscular, and he has little patience for Strauss's pretensions, which perhaps is all for the best.
