 William Sterndale Bennett
WILLIAM STERNDALE BENNETT, one of the most gifted and individual of Enghsh composers, was born at Sheffield, April 13, 1816.
His musical genius displayed itself early, and in his tenth year he was placed in the Royal Academy of Music, of which in his later years he became principal.
Bennett was a bitter opponent of Wagner; but in the unvocal and declamatory character of this solo, and in the dramatic force he has given to it, to the sacrifice of melody, he certainly ventured some distance in the Wagnerian direction.

Sir William Sterndale Bennett was one of the most important English composers and pianists of the nineteenth century.
Bennett, the son of a piano teacher, first drew the attention of the musical world when a chorister in King’s College chapel, Cambridge.
However, for all his critical success, Bennett found that composing and playing classical music did not, in the long term, pay well enough to provide for his wife (Mary Anne Wood, to whom he was engaged in 1841) and three children.

Bennett maintained a terribly creative period during the years of 1832-1838/9.
By the time he was seventeen (1833) Bennett was proclaimed a prodigy and achieved the praise and support of Mendelssohn and Schumann.
Because of the demands of his concert and teaching career (1839-40s), however, and perhaps even because of early fame (and Mendelssohn' death), Bennett failed to produce, slightly despondent over his lack of recognition.

With musical gifts much admired by his friend Robert Schumann, Bennett (who never used the name Sterndale) briefly enjoyed popularity as a composer, although his obvious abilities were later submerged in the demands of public life, as Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge and later as Principal of the Royal Academy of Music.
The third and fourth piano concertos are a good introduction to Sterndale Bennett's music, the first with a romantic slow movement and the latter with a Barcarole (Gondolier's Song) slow movement, inserted at the suggestion of Mendelssohn.
