Jack-of-many-trades William Strauss spoke to a crowd of about 45 last night in Science Center 101 about how current college students are uniquely poised for power as the leaders of a new generation.
Strauss then connected this in a very adamant charge to the audience, as a generation, to find a focus and to become cognizant of the fact that the potential for unprecedented power is present.
Strauss' manner of tracing the social factors that, in his opinion, have positioned his "Millenials" on the verge of gaining power as a generation was enthusiastic and passionate.

Swans Commentary: The Fourth Turning, Book Review by Milo Clark - mgc107
Strauss and Howe are seemingly obedient to Bateson's injunctions to find patterns that connect and differences that make differences.
Taking their generational differentiations at face value, folks born way back in the 1920s are and will be fundamentally different in many relevant aspects than folks born later who, in turn, will be fundamentally different than the successions of folks born thereafter.
Compared to the generational analyses of Strauss and Howe, their works are quite sophisticated and much more broadly based.

Strauss had a good year in 1926 when he not only created Skinner's Dress Suit (1926) but also played George Jessel's immigrant father in Private Izzy Murphy, which dealt with the serious problem of anti-Semitism with disarming humor.
Although Strauss was only Jessel's senior by 13 years (if we are to believe the singer's official birth year), he played his father once again in the part-talkie Lucky Boy (1929).
No longer a character star after the advent of talkies, Strauss continued to play scores of supporting roles through the 1930s, often cast in stereotypical roles such as tailors, pawnbrokers, and rent collectors.

Strauss and Howe apparently have devoted their lives to the study of history and the development of generations in societies.
From this, they've developed a convincing rubric of generational archetypes-GIs and Millennials are the "Hero," Silents are the "Artist," Boomers are the "Prophet," and Xers are the "Nomad." Moreover, they've revisited the millennia old theory that time moves through seasons in a cyclical pattern, one that corresponds with the seasons of the year.

Strauss and Howe's theory of a generational cycle is amazing.
Strauss and Howe show how the "bad blood" during the mid-life "hand-off" between the post- Civil War "Missionary" generation and the "Lost" generation coincided with the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression.
Apart from that, Strauss and Howe showed over ten years ago how the "crisis" era that is only beginning was not only possible, but almost inevitable.

Ex-Capitol Hill aides Strauss and Howe analyze American history according to a convoluted theory of generational cycles, concocting a chronicle that often seems as woolly as a newspaper horoscope.
In other words, if you're born in 1950 and grow up in the '60s and '70s, you'll be different at age 50 than you will if you're born in 1970 and grow up in the '80s and '90s.
Strauss and Howe then trace a number of generational cohorts through American History, and find evidence of a cycle of generational types - usually a four part cycle, but in one case a three part cycle.
