Topic: William Tanui

In the News (Tue 21 May 13)

  William Tanui
William Tanui first came to notice relatively late in life, when he won the 1500m at the Kenyan Commonwealth Games trials in 1989 at the age of 25.
Tanui was unable to repeat this form in his only appearance at a World Championships, in Seville, the following year, finishing 7th behind countryman Paul Ruto.
Tanui concentrated more on the 1500m in the latter part of his career, and he finished 5th at that distance in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

William Tanui, who won 800m gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, was the local contact person for KIM International Management Group, whose founder the late Kim MacDonald managed Kenyan athletes and groomed them into latter day millionaires, thanks to their prodigious running talent.
Tanui was approached by a club in Doha to recruit two athletes, in much the same way that any club would recruit footballers to play for them, not necessarily to change citizenships.
Stephen Cherono, then a world youth steeplechase champion and a world 3,000m steeplechase record holder, set in 2001 and Albert Chepkurui, whose best placing then was fifth in junior men’s race at 1999 World Cross Country Championships, and a fourth place in the senior men’s 4km race two years later, were recruited for the club.
