Morton was born in 1819 in Charlton, a village in Worcester County, Massachusetts.
Morton was present in the surgical amphitheatre in Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) when his former business partner, Horace Wells, failed to convince a scornful young audience that nitrous oxide offered a route to painfree surgery.
At the age of 48, Morton died suddenly of “congestion of the brain”, probably a cerebral haemorrhage.

Despite earlier claims by others, William Thomas Green Morton (1819-1850), a Boston dentist who experimented with ether on himself and animals prior to this demonstration, is credited with bringing ether anesthesia out of the experimental "back room" and into regular use in surgery.
On October 16, 1846, at the "Ether Dome" of the Massachusetts General Hospital's Bulfinch Building, Morton and Chief of the Surgical Service, Dr. John Collins Warren, first publicly demonstrated the use of ether in an operation.
Morton, then 27, gave the ether, which he called "letheon," while Warren operated on a congenital vascular tumor in the neck of Edward Gilbert Abbott, age 20.
