William J. Thoms, however, maintained 'folklore' as something that scattered all around from which our forefather gathered "a goodly crop".
But prior to him in 1812 A.D. the two German brothers Jacob and William Grimm first published a number of oral folk narratives and interpretations of German mythology entitling it as 'volks-kunde' meaning folk wisdom or knowledge.
William John Thoms also refers to matters belonging to 'olden times' while defining folklore.

Thoms article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The term "folklore" (originally hyphenated) was first proposed by William Thoms (1803‑1885) using the nom de plume Ambrose Merton in his letter to the Athenaeum dated August 12, 1846, and published on August 22 of thatyear.
Although Thoms specifically denied that his term was in any way derived from a German word, his unabashed admiration for the work of Jacob Grimm and the fact that the term "Volkskunde" was apparently coined in 1782 strongly suggest that Thoms was, consciously or unconsciously, influenced by the earlier German word.
Thoms cannot be considered a major theoretician in folkloristics, but his creation of the term "folklore" has secured for him an honored place in the history of the discipline.

 Is Folk A Four-Letter Word?
The term "folklore" was first introduced into the English language in 1846 by William Thoms, who urged fellow scholars, who had principally been focused on studying classical European civilizations, to get out into the world and find out what people were doing in their everyday lives.
William Wordsworth and the other Romantic poets wrote a lot of verse about shepherds and other country folk--you didn't think they were called Romantics because they thought sheep dung was so much fun, did you?
When everyone else was paying attention to great men and their great wars or converting the working class into one big lump, folklorists were on the ground, talking to people, listening and taking down their stories, their ways, their history.
