William Thurston - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
William Paul Thurston (born October 30, 1946) is an American mathematician.
Thurston's geometrization conjecture (and all it entails) revolutionized 3-manifold theory, reviving hyperbolic geometry.
Thurston has turned his attention in recent years to mathematical education and bringing mathematics to the general public.

Thurston requested a three-level decrease because the substantive offense of defrauding the United States was incomplete; a four-level decrease because Thurston was a minimal participant; and a two-level decrease for acceptance of responsibility.
Thurston requested a downward departure on the grounds that he had an extraordinary record of charitable work and community service; that the offense constituted aberrant behavior; and that there was the potential for a large disparity with Isola's sentence.
Thurston argues that the trial court erred in not granting his post-verdict Rule 29 motion for acquittal, because the government had not proved an overt act during the limitations period, and in not sua sponte instructing the jury on the statute of limitations.

 William Thurston profile
William Thurston, professor of mathematics at UC-Davis, is a world-renowned topologist, with a keen interest in the application of computing to mathematics.
Thurston's primary work is in topology, which deals with properties of geometric objects that remain unchanged when the object is bent or stretched.
Thurston received the Fields medal for showing that a large class of such manifolds can be blown up to one particular "best shape" that would be, geometrically, a "perfect shape." It will be "perfect'' in the sense that just as on a sphere, every point looks like every other point.

 Cornell Math - William Thurston
Bill Thurston is a topologist, though his work impinges on many other areas of mathematics.
Highlights of his career include his classification of foliations of codimension greater than one, his classification of surface automorphisms, his hyperbolization theorem in three-dimensional topology, and the theories of automatic groups and confoliations.
Thurston has also made fundamental contributions to the theory of symplectic and contact manifolds, dynamics of surface diffeomorphisms, and the combinatorics of rational maps.

Professor William P. Thurston has contributed broadly to geometry and topology with applications to many related areas of mathematics; two of his research endeavors merit special attention.
For example, one precursor to the Geometrization Theorem was Thurston's classification of rational maps on the Riemann sphere, which are a main object of study in dynamical systems and are related to the Mandelbrot set.
Another indication of the influence of Professor Thurston's geometric work are the geometric terms that he coined or popularized, such as laminations, train tracks, earthquakes, pleated surfaces, cusps, orbifolds, horospheres, circle packings, ideal vertices, leopard spots, Dehn fillings, and skinning maps.

Thurston, who joined the Cornell faculty in 2003 from the University of California-Davis, was the recipient, in 1982, of the Fields Medal, one of the highest honors a mathematician can receive, for his work on manifolds, a generalization of surfaces.
Before Thurston, scientists thought that hyperbolic manifolds were extremely unusual; he showed that a very large class of hyperbolic manifolds has natural perfect shapes.
Thurston received his bachelor's degree in 1967 at New College in Sarasota, Fla., and his doctorate in 1972 at the University of California-Berkeley.
