William V, Duke of Bavaria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
William V, Duke of Bavaria (29 September 1548 - 7 February 1626), called the Pious, (German: Wilhelm V., der Fromme, Herzog von Bayern) was a Duke of Bavaria from 1579 to 1597.
William spending on Church related projects, including funding missionaries outside Bavaria - as far away as Asia and America - put tremendous strain on Bavarian treasury, and was one of the reasons William in 1597 abdicated in favour of his son Maximilian I I. Then William retired into a monastery, where he died in 1626.

 History of Bavaria
Bavaria, the centre of the East Frankish kingdom, passed in 899 to Louis the Child, during whose reign constant Hungarian ravages occurred.
The events of 1812 followed; in 1813 Bavaria was summoned to join the alliance against Napoleon, the demand being passionately backed by the crown prince Louis and by Marshal Wrede; on 8 October was signed the treaty of Ried, by which Bavaria threw in her lot with the Allies.
Bavaria accordingly opposed the Prussian proposals for the reorganisation of the Confederation, and one of the last acts of King Maximilian was to take a conspicuous part in the assembly of princes summoned to Frankfurt in 1863 by the emperor Francis Joseph.

Bavaria   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Bavaria is bounded on the west by the Länder of Baden-Württemberg and Hessen, on the north by the Länder of Thuringia and Saxony, on the east by the Czech Republic, and on the south and southeast by Austria.
The efforts of these and succeeding dukes to consolidate their power over the duchy were fairly successful; but their efforts were soon vitiated by partitions among different members of the family—partitions that for 250 years made the political history of Bavaria little more than a chronicle of territorial divisions, family feuds, and petty squabblings.
Duke Maximilian I. fought on the side of the Habsburgs in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and by his leadership increased Bavaria's prestige, gaining territorial accessions and attaining for himself the title of elector.

Britannia Biographies: Henry Plantagenet of Grosmont, Duke of Lancaster
Previous to his departure for Prussia, William of Bavaria, called the Duke of Zealand and Holland, came into England, and was married to Maud, Duke's eldest daughter, with great pomp, in the presence of the King and Queen, in the Royal Chapel at the Palace of Westminster.
The second and only surviving daughter and heir of the Duke was, therefore, Blanche (aged 14 at the death of her father) who became the consort of Prince John of Gaunt, Earl of Richmond (afterwards Duke of Lancaster).
The Duke made his will in his castle at Leicester on 15th March 1361; and, dying of the pestilence on 24th of the same month, was interred in the Collegiate Church in Newark (Notts), on the north side of the high altar, in pursuance of the directions of his will.

Bavaria varies according to the province in question; the races that now live peacefully together under the rule of the Wittelsbach dynasty were once constantly engaged in bloody feuds.

In Bavaria Duke William V, whose ultramontane tendencies were shown by his concordat with Pope Gregory XIII (1583), warmly favoured the idea of a working alliance among the Catholic Princes.
But this was disputed by the husband of Duke William's second daughter Anna, Count Palatine Philip Lewis of Neuburg, to whose son by her, Wolfgang Wilhelm, it was contended that the female claim to the duchy would ultimately pass.
Duke Maximilian of Bavaria was now commissioned by the Emperor to inspect the case, and protect the conventual clergy and other Catholics at Donauwörth in the exercise of their religion.

The Hofbräuhaus was founded in 1589 by William V, Duke of Bavaria.
At the time he was dissatisfied with the quality of the beer being brewed in Munich (he obviously never noticed Augustiner, producing beer down the street since 1328) and felt forced to import the stuff from Einbeck, a city in Lower Saxony.
William V’s son, Maximilian I, a man of different tastes and a more savvy, if ruthless, flare for finances and product marketing, was not much of a fan of the “brown” beer common in those times.
