Pratt was present through all the exciting weeks of the contest between the two factions of the Legislature, and was a member of the party which stormed the door of the State House and broke into the chamber after the populists had locked them out.

Captain Reed assumed duties as Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Naval War College on 10 May 2004 and concurrently serves as the William J. Donovan Military Chair of Special Operations.
In 1967, Captain Reed attended Underwater Demolition Team Training, Class 40, and upon graduation that year deployed on his first of three Special Operations combat tours to Vietnam, first with UDT-12, and then as a member of SEAL Team ONE.
Upon commissioning in 1977 as a Limited Duty Officer, Captain Reed served as the Naval Tactical Data Systems Officer on board USS WILLIAM V. During this tour he qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer on UNITAS-19 deployment to the South Atlantic and in 1980 was redesignated a Naval Special Warfare unrestricted line officer.

Roark and Seaman Petty Officer John D. Cayce were assigned to the USS WILLIAM V. On 12 November 1967, they were performing their duties as part of a helicopter detail onboard the ship in the Gulf of Tonkin.
The ship was rolling in heavy seas when a 20-foot wave swept over the main deck and carried three men overboard.
The USS PRATT immediately turned to recover the men at the same time requested a helicopter from another ship to assist.
