William Wake (1657-1737), English archbishop, was born at Blandford, Dorset, on January 26 1657, and educated at Christ Church, Oxford.
He was translated to the see of Canterbury in 1716 on the death of Thomas Tenison.
During 1718 he negotiated with leading French churchmen about a projected union of the Galilean and English churches to resist the claims of Rome (see JH Lupton, Archbishop Wake and the Project of Union, 1896).

Wake is a V-shaped atoll in the northwestern Pacific, north of the Marshall Islands and lying between Midway and Guam.
Wake to Honolulu N.85degrees E. Wake to Midway N.60degrees E. Wake to Guam S.75degrees W. Wake to Tokyo N.55degrees W. The atoll consists of three islets, Wake islet, the largest, on the southwest, has the shape of a V, the arms of which are about two and three-quarters land miles long.
Each arm is continued as a separate islet, there being a narrow channel between it and the end of the arms of the V. The western ends of the two islets are connected by a sweep of flat reef, which continues as a narrow border around the three islets.
