William Warburton was born on 24 December 1698 at Newark, Nottinghamshire.
As the editor of Pope’s works, Warburton added much of the philosophical and theological apparatus to the voluminous notes in his edition, thus determining that many of the elements in Pope’s writings which would otherwise have been traceable to Bolingbroke’s posthumously revealed deism were effectively Christianized.
Warburton’s attacks on Bolingbroke were frequently intemperate, and were all too often obviously motivated by malice and personal jealousies.

Whether Pope had really understood the tendency of his own work has always been doubtful, but there is no question that he was glad of an apologist, and that Warburton's jeu d'esprit in the long run did more for his fortunes than all his erudition.
He continued to write so long as the infirmities of age allowed, collecting and publishing his sermons, and toiling to complete the Divine Legation, further fragments of which were published with his posthumous Works.

Warburton's major work "The Divine Legation of Moses" aimed at being a definitive reply to the arguments of freethinkers such as William Collins and John Toland, which cast doubt on the intellectual validity of religious metaphors.
Warburton's "The Divine Legation of Moses" and his earlier "The Alliance between Church and State" represented the major intellectual justification of the Anglican church establishment, and as such Warburton's thinking is currently being re-evaluated by historians influenced by the work of J.C.D. Clark.
Warburton was also one of the major controversialists of the eighteenth century, involved in important debates about methodism, the criteria of editorial practice, and the nature of prophecy.
