  Valle Crucis, North Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name of the town is Latin for "Vale of the Cross," a reference to a valley in the area where three streams converge to form a shape similar to an archbishop's cross.
There was scattered settlement in the region in the 1840s when an Episcopal missionary, William West Skiles, came to the area.
Skiles also founded the first monastic order within the Episcopal Church in the United States.

William West Skyles of Hertford county, had joined the mission in 1844 as a farmer, and was ordained a deacon in August, 1847.
Skiles had succeeded in having built on Lower Watauga at a cost of $700, was consecrated by Bishop Atkinson August 22, 1862.
Skiles' remains were reinterred in the new churchyard under the direction of Rev. George Bell of Asheville.

 Brother William West Skiles & Father Anthony
The first person in the Anglican Communion since the English Reformation to persevere in the dedicated life under the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, William West Skiles was born October 12, 1807, on a farm in eastern North Carolina.
In 1844 William West Skiles, at 37 years old, known to be simple, kind, and to have sound practical judgement, was appointed to oversee the mission farm and livestock, and to teach such skills to boys enrolled in the school.
Skiles, impressed by the religious life of the mission, took the vows, and also prepared himself for holy orders.

Skiles is credited with having the most to do with establishing a church and school at Valle Crucis.
A rumor that refuses to die has it that Rev. Skiles hung himself in the church and that his ghost still haunts the sanctuary.

WILLIAM BRYAN, born 10 Mar 1734 at Opequon Creek, Frederick Co Virginia, son of Morgan and Martha Strode Bryan, married Mary Boone 1755 (sister of the famed Daniel Boone) in Rowan Co North Carolina, died 30 May 1780 at Bryan’s Station, Clark Co Kentucky.
William Alma was named after his grandfather, William Young, who married Elizabeth Huff 25 Mar 1770 and their children were all born in the western frontier, including William Alma’s father, Jacob Young on 8 May 1774.

It has been in existence since the mid-1800s when it was established by Brother William West Skiles.
Brother Skiles did not even die near the property; he died of tuberculosis while staying with friends in Mitchell County.
He was never charged with anything like child molestation (check the records, folks—Episcopalians are great at keeping histories!), and he is not buried upside down in the grave (with his feet at the grave marker end of his grave).

William West Skiles, who originally came to Holy Cross to supervise its farming operation, joined the monastic order; and in 1847, was ordained Deacon.
Brother Skiles kept the Episcopal flame alive from 1852, when the Monastic Order was disbanded, until his death in 1862.
