 * Dusted Reviews - White Out w/ Jim O'Rourke and William Winant *
Winant's percussion here is suitably low-key, and yet always maintains that threat of breaking loose into a shower of hits.
Meanwhile, Culbertson, Surgal and O'Rourke seem to be conducting an orchestra made solely of appliance hums as a faint autoharp and robotic birdsong fight for space.
Perhaps it has something to do with the former three's ability to obscure their instrumentation and mesh effortlessly with one another, but even still, the percussionist's scope of expression adds layers of depth, slight rhythmic nuance, and sheer cymbalic oddity that really elevates the session.

And with the aid of these familiar, well-traveled guests-- each of whom has appeared on more records than most of us could consume in a decade-- White Out are here again able to boldly pilot their freeform clamor toward distant alien horizons.
And while China Is Near retains a few hazy echoes of that predecessor, here the group has further atomized their nebulous sound, continually spiraling the music's various fragments further and further outward from previously mapped territories and definable genres.
Neither Winant nor Surgal is the type of percussionist who settles easily for the mundane duties of timekeeping.

Winant's timpani creates globular waves of bass that are further propelled by Surgal's tom toms and percussion, directly in sync with the swelling claustrophobia created by all involved.
A slow earthquake experienced from inside a haunted mansion or maybe a soundtrack for molten lava, this is the type of sound exploration/propulsion White Out is all about.

Secondly, the presence of Rafael Toral, William Winant, and co-producer Jim O'Rourke, who've all worked on Youth-oriented side projects, brings this record closer than any previous mass-market Sonic Youth album to the avant-garde sound that's always popped up in their extracurricular work.
