Williams Gateway Airport was built in 1941 and inaugurated in 1942 by the United States military as Williams Air Base.
The runway was expanded to accommodate jets, and the facility reopened in 2003, as Williams Gateway Airport.

The field was named in honor of First Lieutenant Charles Linton Williams, an Arizona-born pilot in the Army Air Corps who was trained as an aerial photographer.
Williams Air Force Base, as it was named in January 1948, graduated more student pilots and instructors than any other base in the country, supplying 25 percent of the Air Force's pilots.
In 1994 under the cooperation of the state and the jurisdictions surrounding the base (Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek and the Gila River Indian Community), the base was reopened as a civilian facility and renamed Williams Gateway Airport.

Half of the flights will eventually be cargo because that area has been designated about 15,000 acres surrounding the 3,000 acres of Williams Gateway as a job center for the southeast valley.
So we're going to go out and market not only Williams Gateway, but Sky Harbor simultaneously, so if there is a passenger flight, it's probably more appropriate that it go into a hub and spoke such as Sky Harbor.
