In 1857, Bay County was established and Williams Township along with Saginaw County's Portsmouth Township became the charter townships of the newly formed county.
Later, Williams Township was reduced in size as new localized settlements within its boundaries warranted their own township representation in Bay County government.
In 1954, Williams Township celebrated their 100th anniversary issuing the pamphlet, "Auburn - Williams Centennial, 1854-1954" which is the source for most of this history.

Williams joined the Detroit Police Department in 1968 -- the turbulent post-riot era when the force was struggling with integration --and, while earning a college degree in night school, worked his way up to the rank of lieutenant by the time he retired in 1985.
Williams was quietly approached by lawyer and labor friends early in the year and began working party circles while Grand Rapids lawyer and former judge Scott Bowen was campaigning like the nominee, even buying billboard space on I-75.

The works of Robert Williams will be featured in the Lake Michigan College art gallery in the William Hessel Library on the Napier Avenue Campus.
Williams, a recently retired electronic engineer from Whirlpool Corporation, enjoys drawing and painting a variety of subject matter in colored pencil, watercolor, pen and ink but devotes much of his efforts to painting portraits in pastels and oil.
Williams studied portraiture with George Palmer of Buffalo, New York, and has taken workshops and classes from Larry Blovitts, Phylis Rhoads, Joseph Fettingis, and Robert Hoffman.

The first township meeting in Lima was held in April, 1834, and called to order by Russell Parker having being elected Supervisor, with John K. Bingham chosen Clerk, and Oliver L. Cooper judge of elections.
This meeting was held at the house of John Harford and the first act of the electors of the township was to pass a resolution that the town would pay a bounty on wolf scalps.
The Michigan Gazetteer of 1837 described the township as: �Lima Center, village and post office, Washtenaw County and Township of Lima, pleasantly situated on the branch of Mill creek has grown up.
