In the early 1920's the original Williamsburgh Savings Bank, a domed temple at Broadway and Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg that is also now an HSBC branch, was the fourth biggest savings bank in the country.
Though 1 Hanson Place's cornerstone dedicates the building to the bank's depositors, who through their hard work and thrift "swept aside the petty distinctions of class and birth and so maintained the true spirit of American democracy," the bank's loan department was accused of redlining.
