When Western Australia was founded, the inland boundary was naturally drawn at the 129th parallel, which thus became the eastern boundary of Western Australia and the western boundary of New South Wales.
Next Queensland was formed, in 1859, with its southern boundary at the 28th parallel of south latitude, whilst the western boundary, under the somewhat ambiguous terms of the letters patent, was interpreted to be the 141st meridian of east longitude, which was also the eastern boundary of South Australia.
South Australia was intended to be established on Kangaroo Island, which was lauded in glowing descriptions written by those who had never been there; but colonel Light recognised at a glance that a blunder had been perpetrated, and insisted on the site of Adelaide.

So I whisked them all off to Williamstown, in the middle of the construction work, to watch the swim, which was to start at midday.
Williamstown beach was packed; no big surprise since it’s a nice beach and the sea has now warmed up sufficiently that even Victorians can face a dip on a hot day.
This swim is always well organised, and I suspect that the organisers (Williamstown SLC) are still haunted by the events of the 2003 swim when the distance we had to swim was closer to two miles than two kilometres.
