McCovey was quickly successful in the National League, winning the Rookie of the Year Award in 1959, a year after teammate Orlando Cepeda won the award in 1958.
Still, McCovey was an integral part of a Giants team that challenged for the pennant McCovey for a decade, reaching the World Series in 1962 and the NL playoffs in 1971.
McCovey was invited by new Giants ownership to San Francisco's spring training camp in 1977, and he responded with a 28-homer, 86-RBI comeback at the age of 39.

Willie Lee McCovey (born January 10, 1938 in Mobile, Alabama), nicknamed "Big Mac" and "Stretch", is a former slugger and first baseman who played Major League Baseball for the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics between 1959 and 1980.
In the bottom of the 9th of Game 7 with 2 outs, Willie Mays on second and Matty Alou on third, and the Giants trailing 1-0, McCovey slapped a hard liner that was caught by the Yankees' second baseman Bobby Richardson.
McCovey's best year was 1969 when he hit 45 Home Runs, had 126 RBIs and batted.320 to become the NL MVP.
