Saxophonist Condit (a distinguished alumnus of the 1970s Stan Kenton Band) was warmly received by a familiar Iasi audience that remembered fondly his first 2002 residency at the Enescu School of the Arts.

A D.C. native, Henderson was raised by his single mother and received his first alto saxophone while in middle school.
Filling the giant footprints of his predecessors, Hodges and Willie Smith, would be no easy task, especially for someone who was drawing more from the bebop vocabulary than any Ducal saxophonist ever had.

 Bill Smith: IMAGINE THE SOUND
Leader David Parker and fellow saxophonist Richard Underhill were, with the aforementioned Mike Murley, the front line of the Shuffle Demons, a Toronto based funk/jazz/fun band that achieved quite some fame in the latter half of the eighties.
Their music was always boisterous and attracted a crowd outside of the usual jazz aficionados, plus they were often found playing in other music forms.
One major difference is the beautiful Quebecois rhythm section of Pierre Côté, playing a standup bass of his own invention, and Raymond Drouin who cannot be described simply as a drummer for much of the unique sound comes from the variety created by his use of steel pans and djembé.

In 1955, Al Smith was responsible for 15 sessions; he was active with Parrot and United as well as Vee-Jay.

 Long Live King Carter
He was neither a relic of the past or even a representative of it — he may have established himself as a major musician in the mid-1920s, but his music belonged as much to the swing era, to the modern era, even to the millennial era as it did to the Harlem Renaissance.
When I hear the sound of Carter’s saxophone, I don’t think of his contemporaries on the instrument in the pre-modern world, like Willie Smith or Jimmy Dorsey, I think about Charlie Parker, about Cannonball Adderley, about Phil Woods, about Donald Harrison.
It’s hard to believe, but Carter’s vast diversity once was considered a mark against him: Well-meaning friends like John Hammond opined that Carter could attain true greatness only if he concentrated on one single facet of his talents.

Joe Lovano - 52nd Street Themes
It's as though Lovano had worked his entire life to prepare for the work he did in 2000—culminating in the rich, expansive Nonet charts of 52nd Street Themes, written by long-time Cleveland veteran Willie Smith.
Besides the fervor of the playing — Smith says he would've played saxophone, but these New York players were much better prepared — the song selection is astute, Lovano's originals are solid, and Smith's sole compositional contribution, "Deal," is tasty indeed.
Evoking the spirits of Tadd Dameron, Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Ernie Henry and George Gershwin, this album conveys the spirit of bebop as a living tradition, reveling in the collective camaraderie of a smallish ensemble that projects all the harmonic opulence of a big band.
