Stargell retired in 1982 and was elected into baseball's Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1987.

Stargell and Kendall had a ritual in which they'd meet to shake hands before every game, and Stargell would give him a punch.
It was Kendall who caught the last ceremonial pitch at Three Rivers Stadium, and an ailing Stargell made his last public appearance in Pittsburgh to throw it in what was a symbolic passing of the torch.
