Willimantic is a census-designated place and city located in the town of Windham, Connecticut in Windham County, Connecticut, United States.
The American Thread Company had a mill in Willimantic on the banks of the Willimantic River, and was at one time the largest employer in the state as well as one of the largest producers of thread in the world.
Willimantic is the home of the Willimantic footbridge (established in 1907), which is the only footbridge in the United States to connect two state highways, as well as crossing all three major forms of transportation (road, rail, and river).

Willimantic" is the Algonquin term for "land of the swift running waters." The fast running Willimantic River attracted numerous cotton manufacturers from Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the early 19th century.
Willimantic also became a major American center for silk thread and cloth production in the years between the end of the Civil War, and the outbreak of World War II.
Willimantic is positioned 41.71 degrees north of the equator and 72.21 degrees west of the prime meridian.

Willimantic's Frog Bridge, officially known as the Thread City Crossing, connects Routes 66 and 32 across the Willimantic River and a rail line.
In the mid-19th century several cotton mills along the Willimantic River were producing high-quality thread; and the suburbs on the south side needed better access to the borough on the north side.
A footbridge built in 1906 served as a compromise for a road bridge defeated in 1904.

Elice Elwood, an aged lady, fell and broke the neck of the thigh bone; and on Saturday the wife of Orrin Potter was thrown from a wagon, causing a fracture of a collar bone, and she was otherwise considerably bruised.
The dam is to be built across the Willimantic river opposite the stone part of the present grist mill which was formerly the old paper mill.
The boiler and bleach houses are to be between the mill and the river.

The Connecticut Greenways Council designated the Willimantic River as an official Connecticut Greenway in 2003.
Unlike greenways with continuous paved paths, the Willimantic River Greenway is a long-term project to link existing open spaces and to extend walking trails and bike routes along the 25-mile length of the river.
The Willimantic River Alliance proposed the greenway nomination to the nine towns adjacent to the river and submitted the nomination to the Greenways Council.

The conservation measures were implemented two weeks ago after an estimated quarter mile of the Fenton River, one of the University’s sources for water, was dry.
Although the river is flowing again, due to rain two weekends ago, the University continues to conserve water and to ask other users of the system to do so, too.
The University is storing less water on campus to minimize the need for pumping and has begun mandatory conservation measures to save water, including banning the use of water to flush pipes, hydrants, and sewers, or for dust control; minimizing the watering of athletic fields and gardens; and not washing vehicles.

 Windham Mills Development Corporation
Built from granite quarried from the Willimantic River behind the buildings, the first mills were built in 1854 by three men: Dunham, Ives and Capen.
These men founded the Willimantic Linen Company, which was originally opened as a linen factory, but quickly converted to cotton spinning.
The river today continues to be one of the greatest assets for Windham Mills and provides outstanding views.

Finch Applauds UConn for New Pipeline to Willimantic River
State Senator Bill Finch (D-Bridgeport), co-chair of the legislature's Environment Committee, today praised UConn for their plans to replace a 2,000-foot section of pipe that supplies water from the Willimantic River to the campus community.
The $657,000 project was approved by UConn's board of trustees yesterday, and will help to alleviate the university's reliance on other water sources in the area, particularly the Fenton River, which dried up in September, leaving an empty river bed and many dead fish.
