  Willow (movie) - Definition, explanation
The story is known as Lucas' attempt to imitate Tolkien: a young farmer named Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis), one of a halfling-like people called Nelwyns, who is drawn away from his sheltered home to save a baby girl named Elora Danan with a destiny from the evil queen who would see her destroyed.
Willow is aided by the disillusioned master swordsman Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), turned to a life of roguery after the fall of his kingdom to the evil queen.
The movie was eventually followed by a trilogy of thick fantasy novels written by Chris Claremont (again from a story by George Lucas), with the grown-up destiny girl as the central character.

It is a rather good movie that is fast paced and fun, but it does contain flaws.
Some of the effects are good, and some quite lame (the two little guys accompanying Willow), but considering this was 1987 you can overlook this.

Willow Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Willow is crammed with battles, sweeping scenery, and special effects (which, although they're showing their age now, were pretty impressive for 1988), with a healthy dose of humor and romance thrown in for good measure.
The rest of the supporting cast — from Billy Barty's turn as a wizened Nelwyn wizard to Pollack and Overton's over-the-top hamming as Brownies Rool and Franjean — turns in decent performances too; one of the few exceptions is the usually stellar Marsh, who chews more scenery than Faye Dunaway in Supergirl.
Willow may not be Star Wars or Indiana Jones, but it still holds up well, and it's nice to see it making such a nice DVD debut.

The baby, Elora Danan in the "Willow" was the perfect example to play the role because that baby did use the facial expression that revealed about how she felt.

Fantasy movies saw a resurgance in the eighties, only to die a pathetic death in the nineties and now (Dungeons and Dragons anyone?).
No fantasy epic released during this time period were box office hits, but movies like The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story gained enough of a cult base to spawn a bunch of good tries, including this one from a story from Ewok-obsessed George Lucas.

The leaders agree and Willow is nominated as the appropriate party.
Willow differentiated between the height of the different people, but not in an openly disparaging manner; some of the Daikini refer to him in a mean way as a “peck” - apparently a common slur against the Nelwyns - but this just made them seem nastier and wasn’t there to mock the little folk.

 Willow - Movie Review
Willow teams up with a half-crazed human named Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), rescues a shape-changed sorceress, battles a two-headed dragon (allegedly named "Eborsisk" after a certain powerful pair of film critics) and converts the evil queen's daughter (Joanne Whalley) from the dark side, all in two short hours.
Much has been made of Willow's similarity to the Star Wars universe -- the rugged loner and the child that eventually turns from evil -- but those are really just elements of classic fantasy.
Willow in fact stands as one of the great fantasy movies put the film -- in fact, it's one of the only fantasy movies put to film, simply because working with magic, horse-riding armies, endless swordplay, and period sets and costumes on this scale is exhorbitantly expensive.

The next major difference between movie and script is the movie's removal of Madmartigan from the scene where Willow ventures across the water to Raziel's island to seek the sorceress' help.
Again the movie and script differ in that the blatant animosity that exists between Madmartigan and Sorsha at this juncture in the film is downplayed in the script and there are several lines where it is made painfully clear just how attracted Madmartigan is to his feisty captor.
In the movie, it is the Dust of Broken Heart which has bewitched Madmartigan into this lovesick state whereas in the script, it is the ever-growing love that he is feeling for this woman that he becomes powerless to resist.

Willow is one of those movies that you either love or hate.
The story told in the movie is a prequel to the existing book trilogy in the same way The Hobbit was a prequel to The Lord of the Rings.
Willow fits in well with the other Lucasfilm franchises, and it is a shame that it didn't do better in theaters, as we probably would have had a few more Lucasfilm action films to fill the gap in the 90's before the first Star Wars prequel was released.

I do find that some scenes are somewhat disturbing for younger children, at whom the movie is aimed, such as the sequence in which a two-headed dragon rises out of a river; they seem a bit too daring for a children's movie.

Willow is a classic fantasy tale of the most common sort.
Willow Ufgood is certainly the smallest of people, even among his kinsmen, the Nivlen.
However, in spite of the fact that Willow at times gets bogged down wandering about aimlessly in the bushes, director Ron Howard maintains a sense of childlike fun and wonder frequently absent in darker fantasy debuts.
