Raymond has views that are believeable, his letters to Morrisey are legendary and his conversion from his vegetarianism back to carnivore and his apology for it the funniest part of the book.
Russell has achieved something that very few people have, either in literature or film - convincingly and accurately portraying the horror and torture of mental illness.
I felt so moved by this book and the injustice the main character suffered, however Russell still manages to fill the pages with examples of his humour and if you choose to read only one book that doesn't come with a bright lurid cover or a fluffy meaningless picture then make it this one.

This tragic musical is a likeable social commentary that London audiences continue to flock to as the play is now in its sixteenth year in the West End.
You either think Willy Russell is a genius who understands the misunderstood soul of ordinaryville or a patronising charlatan who uses bland characters to illustrate some pretty simplistic social comment.
