Handbook of Texas Online: ALLISON, WILMER LAWSON
Wilmer Lawson (Lee) Allison, tennis player, was born in San Antonio, Texas, on December 8, 1904, one of two children of Dr. and Mrs.
Allison achieved the number-one ranking in the United States in 1934 and again in 1935 and won the United States National Open Championship in 1935 by defeating Fred Perry in the semifinals and then Sydney Wood for the title at Forest Hills, New York.
Allison died on April 20, 1977, of a heart attack, only four days after the dedication of the new University of Texas tennis facility in his and Penick's honor.

Although the firm of Allison & Van Ryn was synonymous with doubles excellence, Wilmer Lawson Allison, who played the left court, had several singles triumphs at the game.
Allison squandered four set points of his own in the second, but the most exciting was to come; from 2-5 down in the fourth he saved two match points and in the last set, from 1-5 down, 16 more.
Allison, who had also been a U.S. semifinalist in 1932, did not defend his title, withdrawing from the scene after losing a 1936 quarterfinal to Bunny Austin, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5, at Wimbledon, where he'd lost the 1930 final to Bill Tilden, Big Bill's last major title.

Penick-Allison, located on the south end of campus next to Waterloo Park, was selected as the "Outstanding Tennis Facility in the Nation" by the United States Tennis Association and has been the site of many prominent championship tournaments.
The facility is named for Dr. D.A. Penick, who guided Texas to every Southwest Conference title from 1908-57 and was the president of the Texas Tennis Association for more than 50 years, and Wilmer Allison, Dr. Penick's leading prodigy.
Allison won the 1927 NCAA and SWC individual titles before enjoying a successful amateur career that included four national titles at Forest Hills, a pair of Wimbledon doubles crowns and a spot on the United States Davis Cup Team from 1928-37.

No one before him has held at one and the same time the American, British, French and Australian crowns, all of which have fallen in 1938 to the rapacity of Budgeís 15-ounce racquet for a grand slam that invites comparison with the accomplishment of Bobby Jones in golf.
In this respect, at least, Budge takes precedence over William Tilden, the Frenchmen, Henri CochÈt and Rene LacostÈ; Ellsworth Vines, Wilmer Allison, Fred Perry, the Briton, and all the other great modern champions.
Jack Crawford of Australia came closest to winning four major crowns when, in 1933, he won three of the titles and led Perry, three sets to one, in the American final.

Correspondence between Coale and General L. Allison Wilmer and others reveal that people wanting the Regiment to go to Cuba and those wanting it to remain stateside were exerting pressure on politicians to intervene in the affairs of the Division.
Specific charges were made against Coale's competence as a commander, and he allegedly ignored medical and sanitary problems in order that his troops would be ordered to Cuba.
