Smith Township, Peterborough County, Ontario, is bordered on its east, north and west sides by Chemong, Buckhorn, Deer and Clear Lakes, and the Otonobee River.
Bridgenorth, Young's Point and Lakefield were all saw mill settlements, and although Selwyn didn't have a mill, it was located on the road north to the timber limits and was an important commerical centre for the men in the lumber trade.
The 1840 census indicates that the total population of Smith Township was 1,286 and that there were 204 households.

The town of Elmira, Ontario is the largest community within the Township of Woolwich in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, and is located 15 km to the north of the city of Waterloo.
This may have been a factor in the decision of Woolwich Township council on February 22, 1853 to rename the community as Elmira.
Like most of the township, the primary settlers in the Elmira area were Mennonites, who still form a significant population today.

The Ontario Amish Mennonite Conference had its origin in the Amish settlement in Waterloo County that began with the 1824 migration from Europe.
A new constitution was approved by the conference in 1970 as an ever greater involvement in mission outreach with both the Mennonite Conference of Ontario and Quebec and the Conference of United Mennonite Churches in Ontario (GCM).
In March 1987 members of the Western Ontario Mennonite Conference voted to disband their separate organization in favor of becoming a part of the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada (1988).

In the town of Wilmot, WI there is a ski area called Wilmot Mountain, believe me its no mountain, and they don't offer family discounts either, I asked.
Donald Wilmot's (Gary's father) first cousin Priscilla Alldin (or Allden) is a direct descendent of the wife of the captain of the Mayflower (and who said Wilmots don't make their mark in the world?).

This group gave St. Agatha a religious atmosphere unique not only within Wilmot Township but also within Waterloo County, as the centre of Catholicism in the County.  Originally named Wilmot, it was named St. Agatha in 1852.
Moreover, as part of the German Block agreement which Christian Nafizger secured in 1822 (see history of Wilmot Township) they cleared land along the front of their properties for the development of the Upper Road.
This road led to Erb’s Mills in Waterloo Township and no doubt contributed to the growth and sustenance of St. Agatha, since supplies for settlement could be easily acquired in the village of Waterloo.

Mike and I decided to paddle some more of the Nith River today (April 25, 2003.) I was up at 8:30, and had the canoe on the car and was all packed up by 9:30.
We drove to where the Nith crosses Township Road 12 (the first road South of Plattsville) (UTM 531200E, 4793250N [Based on NAD 83, Zone 17N]) and decided it looked like a good enough place to put in.
There, we parked the car on the side of the road, took the canoe off of the top and tied it with the other canoe on top of Mike's van (yay for huge vans!).

Pinehill was at the junction of present-day Wilmot Centre Road and the Huron Road, a little to the east of Haysville.
A Methodist church and a school (Wilmot Township S.S. No. 7) were built on the crest of the hill from which Pinehill took its name.
The Methodist chapel was disbanded around the turn of the twentieth century; the Pinehill school closed in 1964.
