WILPSHIRE, a township in Blackburn parish, Lancashire; 3½ miles N by E of Blackburn.
In 1835 Wilpshire was a township in the parish of Blackburn.
For probate purposes prior to 1858, Wilpshire was in the Archdeaconry of Chester, in the Diocese of Chester.

The name Wilpshire possibly came about due to someone being nicknamed Wilps, "The one who lisps".
Wilpshire contains a Methodist Church and one of the oldest Golf Clubs in East Lancashire; its foundation preceding both Pleasington and Clitheroe.

The short working on the Wilpshire route to Roe Lee was somewhat of an oddity, in-so-much-as there was no cross-over situated at Roe Lee and, although the service was only used once a day during weekdays, for mill workers specials at 12:07p.m., the procedure for ‘reversing’ will have been somewhat alarming for motorists.
On the routes of Wilpshire, Darwen Borough Boundary and Church were single or interlaced track was that the Blackburn bound trams always had to wait at the beginning of such track work until the out-bound car had passed.
On the Wilpshire route this was at Brookhouse and the section near to St James Road.

 Blackburn to Wilpshire
It was 6th of January 1888 that the first steam tram ran from Salford Bridge to the Cemetery.
Electrification commenced on July 4th 1901 and the route was altered again so that trams ran out along Penny Street, their return journey bringing them back along Regent Street and Ainsworth Street to Salford.
On May 14th 1902 the route was extended to Wilpshire, bringing the delights of the Ribble valley within reach.

Traffic on the Wilpshire route was held up for half an hour during the afternoon of Tuesday 30th September, 1947 after ‘Milnes’ car No.44 was in collision with a lorry near to Skew Bridge.
December 21st 1947 saw the closure of the Wilpshire route, three leading officials of the Transport Department rode on the platform of the last tram, Chief Inspector Dabbs, Miss Ellis (Committee Member) and Mr Harrison, Rolling Stock Superintendent.
As they arrived at Water Street for what would have been the last journey to Wilpshire, they were informed that members of the Department would be on the tram and they were to use car No.74 instead.

When the line was re-opened in 1994 a new site had to be found, due to the construction of houses which blocked access to the old station.
The platforms which served as the old Wilpshire Station can still be seen today.

This in turn means that unfortunately all Dressage for Wilpshire RC is cancelled, which is a shame, but the Chairperson of WRC had to make a decision and decided that if she ran the Easter Show Schedule,..at least the riding club could still run the BHS qualifing classes on Sunday at the very least.
It's such a shame as this was to be my first outing with my little man outdoors to show him the big wide world of shows and what they entail....and now it's not to be....
