During this period, relations between the U.S. and Pakistan were often strained because of differences over nuclear non-proliferation as well as a military coup d’etat, yet constructive cooperation between the two countries continued on many issues at many levels, which set the stage for the close cooperation between the two in the post 9/11 period.

On several levels the play is a valentine to enigmatic, multifaceted London, and director Wilson Milam summons the city's energy and languor with Daniel Ostling's elegant set of interchangeable walls and Peter Maradudin's flashy club lighting.
Milam is in tune with Marber's edgy urban wit, but things get rougher when anybody starts thinking further than the next fuck – which, especially for the men, is about as close as they get to maturity.
Closer did make me notice how rarely heterosexuality is explored, seriously and explicitly, on Bay Area stages, but unfortunately the play settles for the same arid conclusions that would have left Schnitzler, a hundred years ago, completely unsurprised.

Review of The Wexford Trilogy: A Handful Of Stars/Poor Beast In The Rain/Belfry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The crucial point is that Wilson Milam's production gives Roche's beautifully sensitive and observant creations, these small-town characters and events, their full human weight — less would be contemptuous, more crippling.
Milam also allows a subtle shift in balance between the component plays: where once Belfry had been a climactic minor-key movement, now it is the legacy of the past in Poor Beast around which the trilogy pivots.
As an old jobbing muso, Roche's sense of the musical components of the plays continues to be well honoured, as snatches of songs from the Stones to Nirvana peep round the edges of the action.

Under Wilson Milam's direction, Peter McDonald as Jimmy gives no indication in the essentially plotless first act that he is on the edge of, or even capable of the out-of-control behaviour that his character will lapse into later.
Indeed, he doesn't come across as the central figure in the long scene-setting and atmosphere-establishing interplay among the denizens of the village pool hall, and it is a surprise to return from the interval to find them thrust into the background for the story of Jimmy's sudden and unprepared-for disintegration.
Under Wilson Milam's direction, the sensitively balanced ensemble playing of the cast evocatively captures the small town world in which the brief visit of an old resident could be traumatic, and allows each of the personal stories to resonate without dominating.

Rabe's men are terrified of their women, even the hitch-hiking girl who has been given to them as a present and who touches down with them briefly; their fear is expressed in general misogyny and a tendency to refer to all women, even a newborn baby girl, as 'bitches'.
Rabe has perfectly skewered his time the way the empty-headed flower power of the Seventies gave way to the self-absorbed and violent egotism of the Eighties, and the director, Wilson Milam, has clearly rethought his production since its premiere at the Old Vic as part of Peter Hall's first season.

The tiny steps that everyone manages to take towards health sometimes seem to be moving backwards as much as forwards.
