South Point is the southernmost tip of Wilsons Promontory and hence of mainland Australia.
The only settlement within Wilsons Promontory is Tidal River which lies 30 km inside the park boundary and is the focus for tourism and recreation.

The promontory is in fact one of the highest points on a batholith (a huge igneous rock deposit) which is 300-km long and, at times, 50-km wide and which links Tasmania to the rest of Australia.
Wilsons Promontory was known as 'Wamoon' or 'Wamoom' by the Aboriginal peoples who collected shellfish there over 6000 years ago.
The Yanakie Isthmus, a sandy bar connecting the promontory to the mainland, was added to the park in the 1960s on condition that the seasonal grazing which began in 1852 be allowed to continue.

Whiskey Bay would have to be the nicest of the main beaches on Wilsons Promontory with its huge boulders at either end of the beach.I think its the best beach but everyone seems to by-pass Whisky bay and crowd onto Squeaky beach for some reason.
