The township of Wiluna is 966 kilometres northeast of Perth and is situated on the edge of the desert at the gateway to the Canning Stock Route and Gunbarrel Highway.

In October 1960 the two station workers named F. Vicenti and F. Quadrio were opening a fence gate on the Millbillillie-Jundee track 11 kilometres from Wiluna when they witnessed a bright fireball falling into spinifex (Trioda) grassland to the north of their location.
The debris from this meteor became known as the Millbillillie meteorite and are understood to be actual pieces of the asteroid Vesta that had at some point been knocked off by a collision in the asteroid belt.
Wiluna was the furthest away from Perth part of the Western Australian Government Railways system that was connected to Perth, and the Wiluna branch was connected to the main Northern Railway at Meekatharra

The Shire of Wiluna has asked the Western Australian Government for support to establish an Aboriginal camp in the town, in the state's mid-west.
Shire president Kerrie Johnston says the council hopes to set up a site on the outskirts of Wiluna because large numbers of people often come to the town for funerals and other gatherings.
Ms Johnston says a final design and costing for the project has not been decided on, but it would include toilet and washing facilities and possibly also a kitchen.

The gold mining town of Wiluna is located in the Murchison Goldfield, 947 km north east of Perth and 182 km east of Meekatharra.

Rare and unique photographs depicting the history of the shire of Wiluna have been compiled and displayed for the first time, thanks to a Centenary of Federation grant.
Mr Strugnell says Wiluna was a thriving mining, pastoral and agricultural town prior to World War II, but a lot of that history has been destroyed.
He hopes at least 100 other historical photos will be preserved, and a museum developed in part of the shire office.
