Wimbledon stars Paul Bettany of “Master and Commander” and “A Knight’s Tale” as Peter Colt, an aging tennis star shuffled down to the backside of the tour and Britain’s dark horse for bringing the Wimbledon crown home.
Wimbledon’s biggest flaw is that it really never makes the audience yearn to see these the characters fall in love.
The film never lets us know what was going on in her head and think that reluctance distances the audience from Dunst’s character.

 Wimbledon film review
Instead Wimbledon is an insipid romance set in the world of tennis, but not one any fan of the sport would recognize.
Wimbledon's tenuous verisimilitude could be forgiven if what remained were remotely engaging, but save for Bettany's breezy portrayal of the upper class English tennis hopeful Peter Colt, it's about as entertaining as watching rain fall on centre court.
The film makes token efforts to involve other characters, but without conviction or purpose, resulting in the likes of the wonderful Eleanor Bron and Bernard Hill, as Colt's parents, being wasted.

 Film Review: Wimbledon
Wimbledon is the latest charming romantic comedy from Working Title, the people behind Notting Hill and Love Actually.
That the film is good, rather than great, is presumably because the script isn't by Richard Curtis, the undisputed master of the genre.
The film does suffer from the lack of Curtis's sparkling dialogue, but is nonetheless a thoroughly enjoyable rom-com.

The Wimbledon Video Collection: 2004 Official Film is best described as a "highlights" program for this event: given that the Wimbledon championships run over the course of two weeks, it would be impossible to give more than an overview in the program's 52 minutes of running time.
The film does handle the chronology of the tournament well: the mens' and womens' events are interleaved, as they were at the actual event, and we see the progression from the early stages to the semi-finals and finals.
It's presented in a nice anamorphic widescreen transfer (1.85:1); this surprised me and at first I was concerned that it would be a cropped version of the television broadcast footage, but in fact (thanks to British television embracing the widescreen format) it's clear that the images are presented in their original and correct aspect ratio.

 MovieFreak.com - "Wimbledon" Movie Review
There is no momentum, odd for a sports film, and where Loncraine has shown a gift for depicting the dynamics of human emotion and conflict in movies as diverse as “Richard III” and HBO’s “The Gathering Storm,” he’s at a loss here.
The tennis scenes, save for the gloriously exciting final match (forgone conclusion aside), are a bore with none of their verve, life and, yes, bounce despite all the director’s visual trickery.
But, like a character says late in the film, “Love means nothing in tennis, it only means you lose.” While it doesn’t quite do that, “Wimbledon” still finds itself down two sets to none, only a single break point away from failure.

As a romantic comedy, Wimbledon is so formulaic, such a clone of their previous films, it might as well be Love Actually, About A Boy or Notting Hill.
Wimbledon isn't only a dud romantic comedy, it is also a dud sports film, which is kind of unforgivable, getting two great genres so wrong in one movie, especially given that there are so many opportunities for writing great comedy and drama in both.
