 Linux.com | Review: Win4Lin Pro
Note that Win4Lin Pro is only for Windows 2000 and Windows XP; if you want to run Windows 98 or older versions of Windows, you can use the company's Win4Lin 9x, which has been available for several years.
The Win4Lin requirements don't specify which Linux distributions are supported, or what versions of the kernel or GCC are needed, so it's hard to say whether Win4Lin will run on a given distro or not.
Instead, the Win4Lin Pro page says that "Win4Lin Pro runs Windows 2000 and Windows XP applications as intended" and that it is "the perfect solution for the technical workstation, home, or enterprise Linux user." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that many Windows 2000 and XP applications were intended to have sound.

Win4Lin is installed via a shell script which kicks up a graphical user interface.
In the first stage, Win4Lin checks your distribution and installs its own software and a compatible Win4Lin-patched kernel which then has to be booted to do the rest of the install.
Starting up Win4Lin Desktop, as it's called, loads the entire Windows OS but does so much faster than it would if you were booting Windows by itself on a PC (about 30 seconds or less compared to two minutes on my machine, an old P3 Celeron-533 Mhz with 128 MB RAM).

 Review of Win4Lin 4.0 - OSNews.com
The main reason was because Win4Lin is not an emulator in the "traditional" sense of the word; neither it runs under Windows XP, where our previous test were conducted.
For Win4Lin, these rough edges would possibly be its inability to run applications, video or games that require direct access to the graphics hardware, through DirectX and DirectDraw.
Another improvement I would like to see is the Win4Lin installation part: after you have successfully loaded the new Win4Lin kernel and rebooted, it is not clear how a user can proceed with the Windows installation.

Win4Lin offered a fairly easy installation prior to this new version, and now it's even easier.
To lay the groundwork, you first install the Win4Lin interpreter and reboot into the new Win4Lin shell, then copy the Windows installation files from a valid Windows 95 or 98 CD to your hard disk.
The only thing we didn't appreciate about the installation for version 3.0 is that Win4Lin now has a 28-character code key that must be entered during installation, in addition to Windows' own 25-character CD key.
