May 31, 2007 7:50 AM I know I'm late to teh party, having just showed up on wincustomize, but, wow...
I was on the beta team for 6, and have taught and even published a little aftermarket stuff myself.

WinCustomize - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WinCustomize was launched in March 2001 by Brad Wardell and Pat Ford, both of whom work at Stardock.
At the end of 2004, WinCustomize "2K5" was launched which provided a whole new interface, personal pages for the new "premium" subscribers, and other features to expand the site's mission to include articles, tutorials, and other information on how users could get the most out of their Windows based PC.
As with most large sites, WinCustomize is not without its critics with regards to how the forums are run and the content in the articles and forums area.

New WinCustomize 2007 Launches - CyberNet News
In our Object Desktop 2007 review, we mentioned that WinCustomize is a great place to get themes for the various applications that are a part of Object Desktop.
In he next several months, they plan to have skins added so that subscribers will be able to choose a skin of their choice.
A new addition to the site is that Master Level Skinners will be able to sell their work through the WinCustomize store, and for users, they’ll be able to get a discount through the store when purchasing any Master Skins.

 Wincustomize Subscription - Aqua-Soft Forums
Wincustomize sucks the big one, There's something about them i dunno, most of the skins are crap anyway!
I haven't done this in a while but whenever WinCustomize told me that I couldn't download any more without joining I would just clear my cookies and bang zoom it would work again.
Worth giving it a try if you really want something from them but my opinion is you can find the same stuff with much less hassle on a variety of other sites.

Wincustomize Needs Community Support - WinMatrix
Wincustomize is a fantastic skinning site and anyone that has downloaded one of my themes is familar with it.
The owners, Stardock, are in debates of how open they want to keep their service, they are losing money every year just keeping it running.
The reason I came here and posted and not on any other forums is because I know the people here have more of a understanding about what it is to run a small community website.

Editorial/rant: Wincustomize Sucks... Or How - Aqua-Soft Forums
With this, and the fact Wincustomize are going to have it that only those that get a 2 year subscription with them or those that have registered stardocks products can download files from Wincustomize...
But as I said, wether the file does or not contain a virus is not relevant at this point since, as a general rule, we don't accept executables in the files of our library.
It is not written in the guidelines because when we, admins of Wincustomize, wrote the guidelines, we never thought about it, we never thought people would start uploading EXE's in their zips.

Stardock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WinCustomize is the name of the site that provides downloads for all of Stardock's skinning and desktop enhancement products, on which these products are sold.
A particular example of this is a user, known as "kol", was forced to remove a Vista-like theme from WinCustomize because it bore an uncanny resemblance to the actual Vista.
With the release of Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords, Stardock's next projects are rumored to be a massively-multiplayer real-time strategy "Society" scheduled for 2007, and they are publishing (but not developing) Sins of a Solar Empire a 4x fantasy strategy game.

Skin your Windows XP - Lifehacker
Website WinCustomize features skins, themes, icons, wallpapers, and widgets that you can easily install and use to customize your Windows XP experience.
To be clear on the 'replacement shells' comment, there are no Stardock applications that replace your Explorer shell, although with DesktopX and the proper setup, it is *capable* of it.
Stardock is also an official certified partner of Microsofts, and they work closely to ensure that customizing your computer using Stardock's software remains a safe and reliable method of doing so.

Opinionated Techie - JoeUser.com: The Economics of Skin Sites   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
A popular skin author in WinCustomize typically will see around 35,000 downloads of their skins in a given week.
WinCustomize focuses on users which in turn attracts skinners/artists.
But few people put much thought into "how does this help the site?" The worst case scenario for a site like WinCustomize is to put up a section for a program that doesn't bring in many new users but increases the consumption rate of non-contributors.

After you have an account, you can download up to 50 megabytes (sometimes 100 megabytes depending on the time of year) before you need to contributes something to the community.
After the first year, users can renew for TWO years at a time at the same cost as the initial subscription.
For one there's the WinCustomize SkinBrowser, which some people prefer over Stardock Central since it is a slimmed down version of it.

Neowin.net - Wincustomize : Skinners getting a piece of the action?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
On the one hand, finally, and I mean finally as it has been needed by more sites than just WinCustomize for some time now, a site recognises that it is there but for the grace of its main contributors.
On the flip-side, WinCustomize is, how can I say, more than a little littered with less than second-rate skins and I imagine little Billy Wannabe submitting crap skin after crap skin now trying to make his way into the top ten.
What has long been needed by WinCustomize, in my view, is for someone to be strong enough to declare a standard, from which any skins which don't meet that standard will not be retained for download.

Maxthon & Wincustomize - Maxthon Forum
Basically, if WinCustomize is going to support the program, the program makers have to at least want to direct traffic to WinCustomize.
Yes, there are definatly alot of talented skinners on wincustomize, and I would love to see a category for maxthon there, it's such a great browser and with the way people love to customize over there I'm sure Maxthon would get alot of new hits out of the deal.
I posted on WinCustomize and was told that in order for Maxthon to get onto WinCustomize, an intest would have be generated.
