WinHEC sets stage for Longhorn and 64-bit - vnunet.com
WinHEC delegates have been told that the "adoption of 64-bit systems is expected to advance rapidly, especially in the enterprise space".
Charney highlighted one example at Microsoft where the time to complete a database query was reduced from eight hours to less than five minutes as a result of the faster access to memory on a 64-bit system.
Microsoft is also expected to release a Longhorn preview to delegates at WinHEC prior to the first beta this summer, and will demonstrate some of the software's visualisation and document organising features.

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: WinHEC 2004 Show Report and Photo Gallery
While Microsoft didn't announce general hardware requirements for Longhorn at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2004 this week as expected, representatives from the company did reveal that the graphics card requirements for the upcoming system have changed since they were first revealed at WinHEC 2003 last year.
Part of the problem, I suspect is the constant delays Microsoft faces with XP SP2, which was original due in the first half of 2004, but was recently set back to late summer 2004 (though I'm hearing "July" might be the new date).
This year, at WinHEC 2004, the companies showed off Athens PC generation three, dubbed "Troy," which now features a Longhorn user interface, but still retains the prototypical elements of past designs, like a breakout box for currently unassigned functionality, like a docking bay for a PDA.

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: The Road to Windows Longhorn 2003
During his WinHEC keynote address on May 7, 2003, Will Poole, the Senior Vice President of the Windows Client Division at Microsoft, revealed the roadmap for Longhorn, setting the final release date of the product firmly in 2005, two years from now.
WinHEC is geared toward hardware and driver developers, and clearly this audience needs the most lead-time to ensure that their products are in the channel by the time Longhorn ships.
At the WinHEC trade show in May 2003, Steve Ball, a Program Manager in the Windows Audio Video Devices Group, presented a talk called "Windows Longhorn Audio/Video Devices User Experience (UX)." This talk was notable for a few reasons, but most conspicuously because his slideshow contained imagery depicting the "Aero" user interface in Windows Longhorn.

It remains to be seen whether the open source community can pull together an integrated platform that rivals the two personal computing leaders, but a software platform consisting of multiple parts from multiple vendors will prove to be difficult to deliver as a "seamless" experience.
It could be that you have different software platforms for different parts of your digital life, such as your office, home, music collection, and games.
At WinHEC, Allchin talked about creating scenarios that are "deeply immersive," in which the technology is mostly invisible.

The Richter Scale - WinHEC '95 Brings A Number of Surprises
I skipped WinHEC '94, and felt remorse after numerous people asked me where I had been during the week, as they hadn't seen me. So, this year I decided to give the conference another shot, and I must admit I actually learned something at WinHEC '95, although it certainly wasn't what I expected.
Another thing I observed during WinHEC was how hard certain companies were trying to convince attendees that their world view was a do or die proposition.
At WinHEC, as before, politics and private agendas ran rampant, and the real information to be had was not in the sessions.

In the last couple of years, WinHEC has lost out in terms of coverage to Intel's Developer Forum (IDF), a grander, more expensive, and more pushy PR effort.
The sad thing is that with Microsoft's recent anti-trust woes, company execs just don't have that same pep, and arrogance of the past.
