If you have a WinBoard compatible program (click here to see a list of most of these) then you will be able to use WinBoard as a user friendly interface (or a front-end) to these engines.
WinBoard will not make any moves by itself unless it is using an engine and by default it comes with the GNU Chess engine.
WinBoard not only acts as an interface to chess engines, but also acts as an interface to Internet chess servers (ICS) such as ICC and FICS.

Implemented as an HLA/RTI application, the WinBoard Chronos Adapter is a network adapter that enables WinBoard or WinBoard-compatible chess GUIs to play or observe on-line chess games against each other via the Chronos peer-to-peer network.
The adapter acts as a chess engine to the WinBoard GUI application, but instead of formulating chess moves as an AI player, it forwards and receives moves to and from the Chronos RTI.
WinBoard Chronos Adapter is a proof-of-concept application created to explore the possibility of using RTI as a network engine for on-line peer-to-peer games.

 Support - ChessBase
The file Wb2Uci.exe is a "translator" file that links Fritz7 to the Winboard engine, passing commands back and forth between the engine and interface according to the parameters of the UCI protocol.
I've used the Winboard to UCI adapter as a translator for a lot of different Winboard engines and (so far) all of them have worked in the Fritz7 interface without a hitch.
So when you have a problem with a Winboard engine you've downloaded from a programmer's Web page, please use the "E-mail" link on his page to contact him and ask him if additional parameters need to be set for his engine to work properly.

Initially, this FAQ focused mainly on guiding and assisting a new user to install winboard engines such as Crafty,Comet etc successfully in Winboard (as well as common Winboard compatible interfaces).
For some who are used only to chess playing programs like Chessmaster or Fritz, using Winboard engines is going to be a big culture shock. This is because Winboard compatible interfaces generally (except for a few exceptions like Pondering) do not allow you to alter engine options within the interface itself.
For example, if you have imported Yace into Winboard, and you wish to change the hash tables used in Yace, you will look in vain for an option that allows you to do that in the Winboard menus.....

Winboard versus UCI the big debate   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
UCI is a new standard built from scratch, while Winboard is a ad-hoc protocol constrained to remain backwards compatible.
One reason why this is so is most UCI engines support Winboard as well (most were Winboard engines first anyway see later), and as the Winboard protocol doesn't have the provision for providing opening books to remain functional in Winboard.
The fourth point, which allows UCI engines to implement secondary time controls is also a point that cannot be disputed.Currently on the Winboard protocol, you cannot set time controls like say 40 moves in 2 hours followed by 20 moves in 1 hour and 20 minutes for the rest of the game.
