The lake is artificial in origin, being formed by an earthen and masonry dam on the headwaters of the East Branch of the Naugatuck River.

 Remarks for Bass Fishing Report for Winchester Lake, Connecticut on 7/4/03
Word quickly got out about the state stocking Winchester with bass which opened the door to a perceived notion that the place was a "put and take" fishery.
As far as the bass fishery in Winchester, it used to be an awesome big bass fishery.
My largest bass from CT (9-5) came from Winchester, and there was one fall when they had the water level down about 6 feet for dam repairs that I caught at least one fish over 6 every single time I went.
