 The Wind Turbine Company
Our goal has always been to produce a utility-scale wind turbine that does not need subsidies in order to compete in electricity markets.
However, this growth has been achieved with wind turbine technology that has required subsidization.
To date, we have focused on mechanical hardware and the turbine's control system, improving our understanding of the operating characteristics and fatigue load reduction potential of our proprietary flapping-hinged rotor design.

 Alton's Wind Turbine Page
But most small wind turbine builders will not opt for such a complication in the design, because the payback at small scales is not great enough.
Certainly the core of an alternator winding qualifies for this; the whole idea is to rapidly change the polarity of the magnetism at one end (or both) of the coil, and of course the core is the main conduit for this magnetism.
High winds are great; low winds mean that you'll need a larger prop, since the larger the prop, the lower the windspeed it will work well with.

 IBEW Local 103 - Turbine
For the past eight months, under the leadership of Business Agent Marty Aikens, Local 103 has been working to design and permit a 100 k/W Wind Turbine to be located on our Freeport Street property.
Again, the emergence of wind energy, like solar and other renewable sources, is not a “fad” destined to fade off and eventually bow to more traditional energy sources.
From Solar to Wind and everything in between, Marty has thrown himself into these emerging markets for the good of the union and has truly become a leader in the future of renewable energy in Massachusetts.

 Darrieus turbine
The Darrieus turbine has long, thin blades in the shape of loops connected to the top and bottom of the axle; it is often called an "eggbeater windmill." It is named after the French engineer Georges Darrieus who patented the design in 1931.
One of the two main types of vertical-axis wind turbine; the other is the Savonius turbine.
The Darrieus turbine is characterised by its C-shaped rotor blades which give it its eggbeater appearance.

 Self-Starting Darrieus Wind Turbine
The turbine must then be hooked into a power grid, thereby greatly increasing the complexity of the design, and limiting the use in remote areas, such as offshore.
The main problem with the Darrieus turbines is that, since they are driven by lift forces, it must be brought to a minimum speed before the forces generated are sufficient to propel the turbine.
When the turbine gets up to speed, these sails would have to decouple, and the idea was proposed that the pointed face could be hinged, allowing the sail to fold into the shaft, thereby covering less area.

The Utility Wind Turbine Performance Verification Program was started in 1992 by DOE and EPRI to accelerate the commercialization of wind power.
The reliability of wind turbines has increased from 60 percent availability for machines built in the early 1980s to approximately 98 percent for the newest turbine models [101].
Productivity of turbines, as measured by annual generation per unit area swept by the rotor blades, has risen from 500 kilowatthours per year per square meter to 800 (the average for California’s turbines) [102].

Wind and Hydropower Technologies Program: Low Wind Speed Technology
However, these turbine designs are not well suited to low wind sites and have only limited potential to achieve lower costs of energy.
Wind turbines are currently capable of producing electricity at 4.5 to 5.0 cents/kWh in the low wind speed areas — or Class 4 wind sites — that are broadly available across the United States.
The strategy of the low wind speed technology research is to use public/private partnerships to achieve technical advances in concept designs, component development, and full-scale prototypes.

 WAPA Renewable Resources Program
During the project, which is proposed at a value of approximately $8.3 million over a four-year period, Northern plans to design, build, erect and test a two-megawatt wind turbine capable of "more cost-effective energy production" at low wind speeds.
Wind integration raises issues that do not arise with traditional generating units because of three unique characteristics of wind farms and their output: limited control, relative unpredictability, and temporal variations.
The amount of cost-effective wind in the northwest might depend on the costs of building new transmission to connect wind farms to the grid, as well as any system costs required to deliver wind output to load centers.

Wind Power: Renewable Energy for Home, Farm, and Business (2004) by Paul Gipe
Gipe's new book includes chapters on how to evaluate modern wind turbine technology, how to install wind turbines safely, how to design a stand-alone power system for living off-the-grid, and how to use electricity-producing wind turbines to pump water in rural areas.
In Denmark, for example, three-fourths of the country's wind generation is produced by wind turbines owned and operated by individuals or small cooperatives who generate electricity for their own needs and sell the excess to the local utility.
These wind turbines are the same as those used in California's wind plants, says Gipe, except that they are distributed across the countryside instead of concentrated in one location.

Electricity Generation Using Small Wind Turbines At Your Home Or Farm
Small wind turbines, (see Figure 1), which are generally defined as producing no more than 100 kW of electricity, are designed to be installed at homes, farms and small businesses either as a source of backup electricity, or to offset use of utility power and reduce electricity bills.
The actual power production from a wind turbine will be influenced by many other factors, such as: the efficiency that the wind turbine is able to extract energy from the wind; the elevation at which the turbine is located; and other design characteristics of the wind turbine.
At a minimum, mount a wind turbine high enough on a tower that the tips of the rotor blades remain at least 9 m (30 ft) above any obstacle within 90 m (300 ft).
