Windage and elevation mechanism for laser aimed weapons - Patent 4212109
A windage and elevation mechanism as set forth in claim 5, further including a spring cam and coil return spring disposed within said support member in opposed relationship to said angle bracket for moving said bearing in a direction toward said angle bracket upon readjustment of said adjusting means.
The windage and elevation provisions therein described adjust the vertical and horizontal movement of the laser by pivoting a flat piece of steel having a lower base portion which is bent back upon itself and twisted approximately 90.degree.
When windage or horizontal movement of the laser carrying member 32 is desired, clockwise movement of the windage set screw 26 against the angle bracket 16 will operate upon bearing 14 so as to shift the axial shaft 12 in a horizontal direction thus horizontally moving the carrying member 32.

 Windage shield - Patent 5090865
A windage shield for use with a pair of annular members oriented in an abutting end-to-end arrangement to define one boundary of a fluid flow path, each of the members having a radially extending flange at their respecting abutting ends for coupling the members to each other.
5 is a cross-section of the windage shield of FIG.
Windage shields that have developed from these protective shields have not uniformly eliminated leakage paths which might exist within the shields that permit the cooling air to recirculate within the shield and over the bolt heads thereby dragging down the tangential velocity component of the cooling fluid.

 Windage Tray
I use Esslingers windage tray, and am convinced that it will contribute to a significant reduction of HP loss due to oil whipping around, and trying to follow the action of the crankshaft.
Again, In the past windage trays were reserved for serious all out engines, but lately lots of engines have benefited from them.
On the 4 studs where the windage tray bolts down I had to leave the ARP flat washer off to allow enough stud length for the windage tray and nuts.

 Windage Trays
Windage is the flow of air within the crankcase.
A good windage tray should also keep the oil in the sump from getting into the rotating assembly when the action of the vehicle is in motion.
These trays keep the windage around the rotating assembly away from the oil in the sump and the oil in the sump away from the rotating assembly.

Windage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Windage is a force created on an object by friction when there is relative movement between air and the object.
There is a similar hydrodynamic effect to windage.
In firearms parlance, windage refers to the side-to-side adjustment of a rifle's sight, used to change the horizontal component of the aiming point.

Professional Issues: The Art of Well-Informed Windage
A noun, windage may be defined as “the power of the wind to turn a missile from its course; the distance that a missile is turned from its course by the wind; a change in aim to compensate for windage, accomplished on a rifle by a slight lateral adjustment of the rear sight.”
Windage adjustments will vary with the size and power of a projectile or missile and the distance to the target.
Sometimes a moist finger held in the air is as good an indicator of windage assumptions as is the most sophisticated instrument.

 Windage
Mirabella’s windage does NOT conform to that of a Bermuda rigged cutter in that the cross sectional area presented to the wind is approx 125m², with about 45% of that being mast and rigging.
With the extraordinary height of the mast, windage conforms to the height factor formula, so that what may appear as F6 at deck level can be blowing at over 45 knots at the top of the mast.
For a F6/7 fairly gusty wind, the windage on Mirabella would be in the order of 210,000 Newtons (ie ~21 tonnes force), when presented bow onto the wind.

In one embodiment of the invention, the baffle is adapted to scrape oil from crankshaft windage associated with the crankshaft.
Windage effects increase with: vehicle movement; rpm; stroke; blow-by (atmospheric pressure); bearing clearance; component surface characteristics, oil squirters (there are many types); draining oil from the head, cams, balance shafts and other internal components as well as oil returns from turbos, air-oil separators and catch can drains.
Windage trays are also meant to shield the reservoir oil from the aerodynamic forces of the rotating assembly.

Old Comrades History - The Gun by WL Ruffell   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Windage is generally taken to be the difference between the diameters of bore and projectile.
Some windage was necessary in SBML guns to avoid dangerous shot start pressures and to enable loading to be easily carried out against accumulation of fouling from poor powder, but excessive windage caused inaccuracy as well as loss of MV.
Another excuse for not reducing windage was the liberal tolerances allowed in manufacture not only of bore diameter but also of shot diameter, eg if the bore ended up at the lower figure and the shot at the higher, the powers-that-be argued that windage might be reduced to a dangerous level.

Even without its windage tray installed, Champ's dual kickout pan features a small scraper on the right side of the pan and a baffle to separate oil in the sump from the spinning crank.
The windage tray is a piece of sheetmetal with louvered holes stamped in it.
The strict definition of windage is the power loss caused by the friction of the oil in the engine coming into non-lubrication contact with the moving parts inside the engine.

Reduction of side windage on an electric catamaran - Boat Design Forums
The windage associated with grills and gratings is far higher than that for a flat plate.
Since it has been stated here that a smooth sided hull has less windage penalty than openings would have (although I believe that to be too general a statement to apply to all situations), then if the openings are filled with vertical shutters, then the smooth face can be achieved if they are closed.
If there is a windage on the flat faced hull of say 1 meter x 12 meters, that is quite a bit of area.

Fluent NEWS - Spring 98 - Predicting Windage in Labyrinth Seals
Labyrinth seals are commonly used in rotating equipment to restrict cooling flow between rotating and stationary components.
One of the issues in the design of such seals is the accurate prediction of the temperature rise of the cooling flow due to windage heating effects.
The CFD model was run at several different rotor speeds and the windage heating was computed and compared with the experimental data.

Windage adjustment is made by loosening the lower, smaller knurled nut at the bottom of the elevation nut.
With the lower nut loosened, the post, which is attached to the windage cylinder (calibrated and visible through the two overlapping holes in the block), can be moved left or right.
When the desired position is reached, the post and cylinder are locked in position by tightening the small nut back down (clockwise).

Oil Pan Gasket with Integrated Windage Tray
The first thermoplastic oil pan gasket with an integrated windage tray was featured on General Motors' 3800 Series II V-6 engine for 1995.
The one-piece plastic windage tray, with its molded-in gasket, is retained by existing oil pan screws; whereas a conventional system is comprised of a molded-rubber gasket and a separate sheet metal stamping plus several additional screws and other fasteners that require assembly.
The innovative new windage tray was considered a breakthrough because it eliminated a very labor-intensive, time-consuming assembly step and reduced costs significantly.
