Windermere was from 1894 to 1974 governed by an urban district council which in 1905 absorbed the former Bowness-on-Windermere UDC although Bowness remained a separate civil parish until 1974.

The town has outlined a major stormwater project for North Oakdale Street and is moving forward with a bikepath master plan.
At last week's Town Council meeting, Town Council Member Genevieve Potthast introduced a non-binding resolution asking for a voluntary delay for annexation, rezonings and planned development applications until November (when a new charter could be in force) for commercial, office and residential development in town.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued a warning to the town of Windermere on Aug. 25 that possible violations of state law related to "unauthorized mooring of vessels on state sovereign submerged lands within Lake Down" might exist.
Town Manager Cecilia Bernier said Tuesday that she called to schedule the meeting with DEP officials after receiving the letter.
Windermere has riparian rights to the shoreline of Lake Down between Third and Fifth avenues because the town holds the easement, according to state officials.
