Tyne Valley Line - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The 60 mile (96 km) line was built in the 1830s, and links the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear with Carlisle in Cumbria.
The line was built in sections from 1834 onwards; the entire route between Carlisle London Road station and Redheugh in Gateshead was formally opened to passengers on 18 June 1838.
The line is not an electrified route; passenger services are therefore operated by diesel multiple units, typically Class 142 "Pacers" and Class 156 "Super Sprinters" which were introduced in the late 1980s.

Kendal and Windermere Railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kendal and Windermere Railway is a railway in Cumbria in north-west England.
The Kendal and Windermere was promoted because of concerns that the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway (which now forms part of the West Coast Main Line from London to Glasgow) was not planned to go via Kendal.
Despite this opposition, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Act authorising construction received the royal assent on 30 June 1845, and when the LandCR opened southwards from Oxenholme on 22 September 1846, the route to Kendal was already built.

A 1952 bond issue for a new Central branch building and five more branch libraries failed, but the Seattle City Council gave $492,000 out of its “cumulative reserve” to build the North East, Greenwood, and Henry branch libraries in 1953.
Without a large shopping center or commercial district in the area at the time, the library building’s placement was planned for the approximate center of the neighborhoods it would serve, and was intended to create a physical and social center for the new community.
June Thurston left the branch before the problems were fixed, and Enid Slivka took over as the next head librarian.
