 Guilford, Vermont, New England, USA
Matters were so bad in 1783 that the government of Vermont sent Ethan Allen to Guilford with the militia to enforce martial law and collect taxes (the so-called "Guilford War").
Washington was willing, but said the office couldn't be named Hinesburg because there already post office by that name in Vermont, right where one would expect it, in the town of Hinesburg.
The office of Hale, Vermont went into operation on March 24, 1896, but it never flourished, and was discontinued in 1903.

William Czar Bradley (1782-1867) of Westminster, Vermont, was one of the great lawyers and political figures of the middle nineteenth century.
He was appointed State's Attorney for Windham County in 1804 and used that post as a steppingstone for a long career in law and politics in Vermont.
He was a presidential elector from Vermont in 1856, where he cast his vote for John C. Fremont, the first presidential candidate of the Republican Party.

An early resident of Guilford, Vermont, and later a resident of Brattleboro, Vermont, Royall Tyler was a chief justice of the Vermont Supreme Court and an author.
He moved his law practice to Guilford, Vermont, in 1791 and served as state’s attorney for Windham County, Vermont, 1794-1801; assistant judge of the Vermont Supreme Court, 1801- 1807; and chief justice, 1807-1813.

Highlights include many excellent early portraits, Vermont furniture from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, folk art, textiles, a superb collection of Civil War artifacts, including battlefield souvenirs, and the history of the West River Railroad.
With a grant from the Town, the society reprinted (4th edition) "Hometown Jamaica: A Pictoral History of a Vermont Village." We are also interested in preserving artifacts, documents and photographs, and are in the process of restoring a plaque stolen from the Jamaica State Park commemorating the "Salmon Hole Massacre" incident.
