The earliest record of a windmill at Walton is 1342, [detailed in 'Building a Post Windmill in 1342' in Transactions of the Newcomen Society Volume XXXIV(1961-62) pages 151-154 by Ian Keil], but it is not clear whether it occupied the site of the present mill.
Walton Windmill, together with the surrounding acre of land, is now a fenced-in "island" on Ivythorn Hill, the rest of which is National Trust land.
According to the legend he sheltered in Walton Windmill for a day; but it could not have been the present structure which was not built until nearly a hundred years later.

It is possible to trace the lines of the three circuits of Neolithic enclosure ditch at Windmill Hill, but the shallow depressions which are visible are mainly ditches excavated in the 1920s and subsequently refilled almost to their tops.
For Windmill Hill, current interpretations emphasise the role of the hill through repeated use, a site where coming together may have been a way in which Neolithic people reassured themselves as to the nature of their society and reinforced their ideas about what it was right to do, to make, and to eat.
Yet Windmill Hill remains one of the largest enclosures in the group, and its seminal importance remains for its crucial role in defining the early Neolithic of southern Britain in the middle years of the 20th century.

During the course of examining the timbers of Windmill Hill Mill, many carpenters' marks were found, which has enabled the millwrights to piece the timbers back together in order to determine the original lengths of the sidegirts and some of the other major timbers.
It is considered that the problem of stability does not arise until the fitting of the sweeps, so the mill body can be assembled in Autumn 2004 without having to resolve the method by which it will turn to face the wind.

The term is more popularly used to describe the Copp's Hill Burial Ground, located on the same hill, the second oldest cemetery in Boston, founded in 1659 (the oldest is the burial ground at King's Chapel).
The hill was, therefore, first called 'Windmill Hill' or 'Windmill Point' and later, when mills were built elsewhere in the town, became known as 'Snow Hill' (possibly after Snow Hill, London).
Copp's Hill is the highest point in the North End of Boston but it is lower than Beacon Hill and Fort Hill.
