Window function - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In signal processing, a window function (or apodization function) is a function that is zero-valued outside of some chosen interval.
For instance, a function that is constant inside the interval and zero elsewhere is called a rectangular window, which describes the shape of its graphical representation.
The Hann window is sometimes called the "Hanning" window, in analogy to the Hamming window.

Windowed sinc functions are reported to perform quite well, based on a purely quantitative comparison to linear interpolation, with Welch, Lanzcos and Kaiser windows, the truncated sinc kernel is reported to be one of the worst performing kernels.

The fixed shape window functions (Hanning, Hamming and Blackman) are plotted in the diagram opposite.
In common with all tapered data window functions, these are symmetrical about the centre line (n = 0) and have a maximum value of 1, tapering towards zero on both sides (although some window functions, such as the Hamming window, do not quite reach zero at either end).
The versatility of the Kaiser window is evident.

Put mathematically, a window function has the property that its value and all its derivatives are zero at the ends.
Multiplying by a window function (called 'windowing') suppresses glitches and so avoids the broadening of the frequency spectrum caused by the glitches.
Windowing can narrow the spectrum and make it closer to what was expected.

Interference Suppression | RF Design - windows for multitone suppression, interference suppression
The behavior of windows, in terms of their sidelobe peak, asymptotic decay or mainlobe width, is determined by the type of function and the criteria used to determine their coefficients.
The energy in the sidelobes is minimized by forcing the frequency function to vanish at frequencies where the amplitudes of individual terms (in the frequency function) are maximum.
This function is called a cosine-powered window and as evident from the Table 1, its asymptotic decay is proportional to the power of the cosine function.
