Window tax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The window tax was a glass tax which was an important social, cultural, and architectural force in the kingdoms of England, Scotland and then Great Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The tax was introduced in 1696 under King William III and was designed to impose tax relative to the prosperity of the taxpayer, but without the controversy that then surrounded the idea of income tax.
It was an exercise in ostentation, spurred by the window tax.

This is a pun on the historical phenomenon, the window tax.
In most of the world, IBM PC compatible computers are often still sold only with a copy of the Microsoft Windows operating system pre-installed.
There have been a public protests about the Windows Tax, since February 15, 1999 which was announced the "Windows Refund Day" and a number of people from SVLUG (the Silicon Valley Linux User Group) marched to Microsoft's offices in Palo Alto to protest.

 AICPA Technology
Since tax software for the 1997 tax year is not yet ready—but relatively few basic changes are made from year to year—we performed our tests on the 1996 tax year products, inviting the vendors to tell us what, if anything, will be changed or new for next year.
But two years ago, Windows 95 debuted, and the objections began to fade: Windows 95 is stable and applications written specifically for it—in 32-bit code—for the most part are fast and powerful.
To enter data, the tax preparer first selects a folder, then picks an appropriate tab inside the folder, such as the W-2 income or interest/dividends (the tabs look like worksheet tabs in Excel) and inputs the data into the appropriate fields, which are automatically displayed.

 TAX SOFTWARE HITS THE NET
This tax year, at least one vendor—RIA—will put its complete GoSystem Tax software product on its own remote servers, and tax preparers will have the option of doing their clients' returns remotely via direct high-speed communication links or the Internet rather than have the tax software run on their own systems.
And since the tax return is calculated by the software in the high-speed remote computer, the back-and-forth transmission of that data also can be transmitted at nearly real-time speed.
Most tax preparers were not eager to upgrade to Windows: After all, the early versions of the graphical operating system were slow and—worse—unreliable.

In Western Europe at one time, people were taxed not only on the value of their houses and incomes, but also on the number of windows in their homes.
Thanks to a solution adopted by the tax preparation software industry, however, this delay in getting the necessary software to the masses in time to allow for sane tax preparation is not a serious obstacle.
Buying tax prep software before the final version is available usually requires you to send in the head start version's registration card in order to receive the final version of the software with accurate, approved tax tables.

 Arizona Income Tax
Arizona state income tax is a percentage of federal income tax withheld.
State income tax to be withheld is either 10%, 18%, 21%, 23%, 29%, or 34% of the federal rate depending upon the employee's prior year gross earnings and choice of percentage.
Arizona does not have any standard deductions or personal exemptions; Therefore, VistaCARE users simply enter the withholding percentages for an employee in the "number of exemptions" field on the Employee Information screen, and the Payroll system uses the number entered to determine the employee's withholding rate.

And if you have a Windows sysadmin who knows a bit about database internals, or about SQL Server in particular, that will cost the company a LOT less in the long run than trying to learn RedHat or hiring another sysadmin.

Sasser ups cost of Windows - Gartner | The Register
Gartner is advising its customers to budget for extra security spending on Windows desktops in the wake of the raft of problems caused by the Sasser worm this week.
In a research note, Gartner writes: "Many of the vulnerabilities that continue to be identified in Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 are easily exploitable; attackers will continue to develop worms that will cause damage equal to, or more severe than, the system shutdowns and network congestion caused by the Slammer worm.
Quite how much by Gartner doesn't say but for users evaluating Windows against Linux this is another entry in the debit column against Microsoft, something Redmond can ill afford in face of an increased competitive threat from Linux vendors.
