Windows Live Messenger (WLM), formerly known as MSN Messenger, is a freeware instant messaging client for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Mobile, first released on July 22, 1999 by Microsoft.
Windows Live Messenger uses the Mobile Status Notification Protocol (MSNP) over TCP (and optionally over HTTP to deal with proxies) to connect to the.NET Messenger Service — a service offered on port 1863 of messenger.hotmail.com.
Such examples are MSN Messenger's nudges being similar in concept to Yahoo's Buzzes [2], winks being a more primitive form of Yahoo's audibles [3], web messengers [4] (that allowed IM access from a web browser), and the introductions of two-player games and avatars being later than that of Yahoo's.

Windows Live Messenger is definitely more animated than all its rivals and I’m sure Skype, AIM or Yahoo Messenger should fear it.

It's called Windows Live Messenger and was released as a public beta tonight, available for download only via IE (tsk tsk).
LiveSide also pointed out that "now available for purchase are the Windows Live Messenger cordless phones, produced by Uniden Corp. and Phillips." So that's a very interesting Web-software-hardware integration, which I'll be looking into more.

 Inside Windows Live Messenger:: Not Yet, But Soon: Windows Live + Yahoo!
I downloaded the messenger 8.0 beta a month ago and I dont like it because its too slow when you see the pictures of the spaces.
So with yahoo messenger compatibility coming...there will be more friends coming in...but with the number limitation that exists we will be making a choice between which friend to add and which to delete.
It would be nice if windows live messenger didn't keep failing on me everythime i tryed to use it bloody computers, who'd heave em' oh yeah wait me.

Windows Messenger has been axed as of Vista, to save all the lawsuit hassle.
Windows Messenger, however, is NOT the same thing MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger (which are not included with Windows in the first place).
For those wondering what will happen to MSN Messenger as soon as its successor goes final, it will live on "for people using operating systems older than Windows XP (on which Windows Live Messenger is not supported)".
