Windows Metafile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Windows Metafile (WMF) is a common graphics file format on Microsoft Windows systems.
Essentially, a WMF file stores a list of commands that have to be issued to the Windows graphics layer GDI in order to restore the image.
WMF is a 16-bit format introduced in Microsoft Windows 3; a newer 32-bit version with additional commands is called Enhanced Metafile (EMF).

The size of a window is computed from information provided about the display: it depends on the system being configured accurately.
A graphics window is not allowed to be specified at more that 85\% of the screen width or height: the width and height are rescaled proportionally.
A graphics window will never be created at more that 85\% of the screen width or height, but can be resized to a larger size.

When the metafile data is rendered (or played back, in Microsoft terminology), the data from each record is used to perform the appropriate GDI function call to render each object stored in the file.
Clipboard metafiles are also based on the standard metafile format, but are preceded by an additional 8- or 16-byte header that allows the position of the metafile on the Clipboard viewer.
Width and Height are the size of the metafile in the units specified in the MappingMode field.

Microsoft Windows Metafile: Summary from the Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats
Microsoft Windows Metafile (WMF) files are used to store vector and bitmap-format image data in memory or in disk files for later playback to an output device.
Although Windows Metafile is specific to Microsoft Windows, many non-Windows-based applications support this format as a method for interchanging data with Windows applications.
When the metafile data is rendered (or played back, in Microsoft terminology), the data from each record is used to perform the appropriate function call to render each object in the image.

The drawing process for metafiles is similar to a recording of the image's original creation, where each shape is quickly drawn in the same order in which it was originally created.
Metafiles can be created with metafile editors, such as MS Draw (included with Microsoft Word for Windows version 2.0).
When a metafile image is embedded or linked, the server application (the application associated with the object) for such objects will be a metafile editor such as MS Draw.

Typically, a metafile is made up of commands to draw objects such as lines, polygons and text and commands to control the style of these objects.
But as soon as the user tries to edit (or ungroup) the metafile, then they convert it to their own internal format and that's where the idiosyncracies occur.

Windows metafiles consist of a series of Windows graphics vector instructions which are intended to reproduce the original image.
Windows Metafiles offer superior resolution and scaling, although the program importing the image may have difficulties in properly rendering text elements such as superscripts, subscripts, and symbols in their proper positions.
When a metafile image is placed and scaled, the software importing the file may not preserve the proper character spacing across the separate text segments.

If the metafile data grows too large to be stored in memory, or needs to be saved before an application terminates, the data can be written to disk in the form of a WMF or EMF file and played back from disk.
If you are using metafiles in the Windows or OS/2 operating systems you will not write code to parse them directly, but instead call a set of Windows API functions used to manipulate metafiles.
When a Windows Metafile format file is played back in the Windows environment, each record is read and the function call it contains is executed in the sequence in which it is stored in the file.

Special Considerations and Incompatibilities for pasting bar codes into documents
The Windows Metafile format is ideal for creating bar codes however the new Enhanced Metafile format has several major design flaws that render it inadequate for creating extremely high resoliution graphics (as required when printing bar codes).
Metafile images are device independent, scaleable images that consist of drawing instructions used internally by Windows to reproduce an image in a manner that uses the highest resolution of the device that the image is being printed on.
When you paste a Metafile bar code produced by B-Coder into a graphics or drawing program that only has the capability of working with bitmap files (.BMP) such as the PaintBrush program that comes with Windows, your bar code will be automatically converted from a Windows Metafile format to a bitmap format.

 Introduction to Windows Media Metafiles
Windows Media metafiles, commonly known as playlists, are text files that link Web pages to Windows Media–based content on a Windows Media server or Web server.
The purpose of a metafile is to redirect streaming media content away from browsers, which in most cases are not capable of rendering the content, to Microsoft® Windows Media Player.
You can use metafiles to provide a means of automatically switching to alternate content sources when a stream cannot be accessed or played for some reason.

For the second time this week, hackers have posted a sample of code that could be used to attack a Windows machine that has not been updated with the most recent Microsoft (Profile, Products, Articles) Corp. security patches.
Microsoft believes that this code could be used to effectively rendering a machine unusable, something called a denial of service (DoS) attack, but it can not be used to take over an unpatched computer, the software vendor's public relations agency said in a statement.

The SMTP and NNTP components within Windows Server 2003 and Exchange can be exploited by hackers, as well, said Microsoft, because of the way the former handles domain name system (DNS) lookups, and due to an unchecked buffer in the latter.
