Making the Skies Safe from Windshear
Windshear studies at Langley started in 1986 with analysis, moved to simulation and now are in the flight-test stage.
Windshear is a generic term referring to any rapidly changing wind currents.
Windshear poses the greatest danger to aircraft during takeoff and landing, when the plane is close to the ground and has little time or room to maneuver.

windshear   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
One of those buzzwords that scare the crap out of people, windshear is a sudden change in the direction and/or velocity of the wind.
Fortunately, windshear has become easier to forecast, and as a rule it does not appear out of nowhere, flipping a plane upside down without warning.
Windshear got a lot of press in the 1970s and 1980s when it was still a misunderstood phenomenon.

Plane crash in Taiwan occurs just months before Windshear Alert System is completed
Windshear is a rapid change of wind speed or direction over a short distance.
One form of windshear that is particularly dangerous to aircraft are microbursts, which are very short-lived, intense, downdrafts of air.
Windshear is also associated with frontal systems that are the result of thunderstorms, where the front marks an abrupt transition in wind speed and direction.

Windshear is any rapid change in wind direction or velocity.
Severe windshear is a rapid change in wind direction or velocity causing airspeed changes greater than 15 knots(~17mph) or vertical speed changes greater than 500 feet per minute (around 5-6 mph in the vertical direction that is a lot).
Identification of concentrated, more powerful downdrafts, known as Microbursts, has resulted from the investigation of windshear accidents and from meteorological research.

Windshear has been blamed for over 30 aircraft accidents in the U.S., and the loss of hundreds of lives.
After a bad windshear accident in 1985, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and NASA began to work together to find a way to predict windshear, and to give pilots enough warning to take preventive action.

Windshear is a rapid change in wind direction over a very short distance.
Davidson said that according to his reports, the plane shifted drastically as its onboard windshear alert system sounded at an altitude of 800 to 1,000 feet as it approached the airport from the northwest.
Northwest has trained pilots how to handle windshear, its meteorology office is good and the June 24 incident is "not consistent with how they generally operate," Mahoney said.

Predictive windshear warning instrument - Patent 5059964
An instrument (10) is disclosed for an aircraft having a windshear warning system to vary the threshold alarm setting as a function of a thermodynamic property of the air and as a function of local geographic and seasonal conditions.
A windshear warning system that would not only provide adequate warning but also take in consideration special conditions at the airport of interest, including seasonal and geographic conditions would prove to be a significant contribution to the art and an important advance in flight safety.
This invention is an improvement over conventional windshear warning systems inasmuch as it incorporates a better understanding of the meteorological phenomena associated with a windshear or microburst condition, thereby improving the margin against unwanted warnings and improving the time for the pilot to react.

Windshear guidance system - Patent 5361065   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Flight guidance in increasing performance windshear is based on the fact that the weather phenomenon of a microburst in the vicinity of the approach or departure area of an airport, where aircraft are operating at low altitude, may lead to hazardous conditions, and crashes have been documented as a direct result of this problem.
According to the present invention, a windshear guidance system is provided to adjust the performance of the aircraft during the initial increasing performance windshear encounter such that the kinetic energy of the aircraft will be increased, and this increase in energy will help to prevent a crash during a subsequent decreasing performance windshear.
In operation, a windshear detector (not shown) is utilized to determine that an increasing performance windshear is present, and when of a significant magnitude, the increasing performance windshear guidance is activated.

 Comixfan Forums - Windshear
Windshear is a mutant who possesses the ability to create solidified molecules air through the process known as transmogrification.
Windshear can manipulate this "hard air" in a variety of ways, including projecting a stream of hard air molecules as concussive force blasts at a speed of up to approximately 60 miles per hour, to assist propulsion whilst flying, create defensive hard air shields, or entrap others in blocks of solid air.
Windshear originally wore a suit of armor he received from Roxxon which affords him a certain level of physical protection as well as increasing his natural strength.

Onboard reactive windshear devices now provide windshear alerts to help pilots recognize that they have entered a windshear event, but they are reactive and do not provide an alert that can help pilots avoid windshear before they enter the event.
This short duration is due to a combination of the true life cycle of the events coupled with the fact that they are usually moving with the precipitation cells.

Members of the Aeronautics Advisory Committee that oversees the research efforts of NASA called the windshear program "NASA at its best."[Ref 5-1] The windshear program was, indeed, a classic research success story, and its achievements were even more extraordinary because of the significant organizational and technical challenges the program involved.
In truth, the technology for airborne windshear detectors and the level of knowledge about the phenomenon itself were still very limited, although researchers were working on the problem.
Passive infrared radiometry was based on the premise that since microbursts were formed by a column of cooler, rapidly descending air, their presence would be marked by a sharp temperature shift in the air ahead of the airplane.

For the information provided by windshear sensors to be meaningful, a hazard index has been developed by NASA's Langley Research Center.
Hazard criteria are based on Langley's analysis, flight tests, comparisons with windshear accident reconstructions and case studies of inadvertent encounters with severe windshear.
As a result, hazardous windshear is considered to exist when the average F-factor exceeds 0.105 over a one-kilometer segment along an aircraft's flight path.
