Windsor Davies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Windsor Davies (born August 28, 1930) is an English-born Welsh actor.
Davies was born in Canning Town, London to Welsh parents, and he returned to his parents' native Rhondda Valley when the Second World War began, in 1940.
As a spin-off from the series, Davies and his co-star, Don Estelle had a number one hit in the UK with a semi-comic version of Whispering Grass.

Windsor continued to press and when Marlow were penalised for 'diving over', Adler made no mistake with the kick to level the scores at three apiece with nine minutes gone.
Windsor conceded a penalty close to their posts to allow Marlow to get within a converted try of equalising after 39 minutes and from the re-start, Marlow launched a series of attacks.
Windsor would probably have settled for this result at 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon but, with a 13-3 lead and only a few minutes to go, they must have thought that they were home and dry.

Carry On films - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the most iconic Carry On stars was Barbara Windsor, although she only appeared in 9 of the films.
Owing to the withdrawal of American funding from British films, with a few exceptions, many of the most profitable British films during the 1970s were those adapted from television series (such as Steptoe and Son), or erotic comedies.
The influence of these genres is keenly felt in the Carry On series' output of this period, with an increased sexual content and more television stars (such as Windsor Davies) appearing in place of regulars.

So both Davies and Sinden were well known, popular and practiced sitcom hands, although of the two Davies was certainly the more famous (at least in televisual terms) at that time.
Beyond the considerable talents of Sinden and Davies, and in keeping with the aforementioned policy of introducing significant sub-plots to the story arc, there are several other excellent performances in the first series of the programme.
It was only the quality of Sinden and Davies and the acute sense of Mortimer of where the weaknesses and strengths of his scripts lay that pushed it in the direction of greatness.

DVD Times - It Ain't Half Hot Mum - Series One
For here, back in 1974 and despite the show being famous for the boiled-in-the-heat temperament of Sergeant Major Williams (Windsor Davies), there's a certain campness to the character that is at odds with the ferocious tearing down of his lovely boys.
Again, though, Davies has that oddness as he reveals an unrequited love, is convinced that Parkins is his illegitimate son and, simply by being in the camp at all, suggests that his frustration at commanding a group of, in his words, poofs is born out of not being a very competent soldier.
The crux of the humour is in the contrast between types - Davies' soldier is set as the shouting bulldog of an officer whilst, all around him, are those that he would consider an insult to the uniform.

"Windsor Davies" was the type of man who knew everyone and in turn was known by everyone: he was the archetypal ex-army officer with a mischievous sense of humour and a view on everything; instantly recognisable with his bushy, military moustache, and whisky glass in hand.
This is not to say that "Mr Niven" doesn't share "Windsor's" sense of humour, just that he has the charm that makes it impossible for anyone to take offence.
I must explain that "David Niven's" real name is Charles Dalgleish, and "Windsor Davies" is better known as Joe McGill, but if these two gentlemen were to walk into your living room you would recognise them as "Niven and Davies" immediately.

The motley crew sent to entertain the British troops in India were the responsibility of Sergeant Major Williams (the brilliant Windsor Davies), a gruff Welsh RSM who referred to his charges as 'A bunch of pooftahs' and whose favourite command was "Shut Up!".
By this time the vengeful, petty-minded BSM Williams was the dominant force in the show, constantly boiling over with anger at the inefficiency of his gunners.
The physical contrast in size and volume between Williams (Windsor Davies) and 'Lofty' (Don Estelle) drew the biggest rewards and the two created an unlikely double-act that resulted, incredibly, in a number one hit single in 1975 with their rendition of Whispering Grass.

Based in India it was the concert party's job to entertain the troupes and although these were hardly ever in evidence the 'boys to entertain you' were kept on their toes by their loud mouthed Sgt Major Williams (Windsor Davies), or 'Old Shut Up' as they preferred to call him.
In turn he referred to them (in the days before political correctness had been invented) as 'A bunch of pooftahs', content to sing and dance their way through the hostilities rather than fight.
Davies and Estelle formed something of a double act and recorded a single 'Whispering Grass' -which, not unsurprisingly, given the Brit's love of novelty records, went straight to the top of the charts upon its release in 1975.
