 Windsor Ruins
Although a large number of mansions did not make it through the Civil war, the Windsor mansion is believed to have survived due to the southern charm and quick wit of the mansion's mistress and it's potential to the North as a Union Hospital and observation post.
Windsor is also believed to be the first Mississippi mansion Grant's men encountered on April 30, 1863 shortly after crossing the Mississippi river from the Louisiana side on their way to cut off Vicksburg from the south.
The Windsor architecture included 25 rooms, water tanks in the attic which provided water for the indoor baths and an above ground basement that was large enough for a small school, dairy and root cellar.

Windsor was built by Smith Coffee Daniell II, who was born in Mississippi in 1826, the son of an Indian fighter turned farmer and landowner.
In 1859 the couple begin to build their home, Windsor, which was not completed until 1861.
The iron stairs, column capitals and balustrades were manufactured in St. Louis and shipped down the Mississippi river to the Port of Bruinsburg, several miles west of Windsor.

At the time of its construction, the trees were not as overgrown and the Windsor probably afforded its inhabitants a spectacular view of the Mississippi River.
While hard to find, the Windsor Ruins were recently discovered by Rob Reiner, who staged a scene from the film "Ghosts of Mississippi" there.

Departing SS troops set the Berghof on fire on 4 May 1945, and the ruins were still smoldering when soldiers of the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division arrived that afternoon.
Note the camouflage painting on the side of the house, which was also applied to the buildings of the Platterhof and SS Kaserne, and the snow remaining from a light snowfall the night before.
The view on the left, taken from the ruins of Bormann's house, shows the retaining wall in the back of the Berghof, which is all that remains aboveground today.

 Mississippi Motorcycle Roads and Trips
Riding the Natchez Trace is truly a ride through history (see Natchez Trace listing) however, it is not really a motorcyclist's "dream road." Low speed limits and long straight sections, with trees and more trees, can make a motorcyclist's throttle hand twitch for something new.
If you pick up 552 from the south, you will come to the Windsor Plantation Ruins in approximately 12 miles.
What remains of the ruins is a series of 24 columns and some remaining iron work.
